Can Mirtazapine Be Added To Sertraline To Enhance The Sertraline?

I absolutely do not want to go off Sertraline, but a friend has had good results so far (especially in the sleeping at night area) with Mirtazapine ... she's taking 2 grams which sounds humongous but. Does anyone know if a small amount of Mirtazapine can be taken along with Sertraline. I'm going through these constant depressive episodes and I'm on 200mg of Sertraline.

I'm also going to try and take brand Zoloft (waiting to get a card for reduced price).

Help, I'm sick of being so depressed and anxious so much.

thanks
denise

Hello, Denise! How are you?

No, they really can't be taken together, since they both work on Serotonin and it could elevate your levels too much, which may create a dangerous condition called Serotonin Syndrome, which has the potential to be fatal.

Since Sertraline is an SSRI, it could be that it isn't the right medication for you and you may need to switch to something else. It only affect serotonin, while Mitrazapine is a noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant.

Have you discussed the issue with your doctor? Why don't you want to go off of it, if it isn't totally doing the job it is supposed to?

Typical side effects, as listed by the FDA, may possibly include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, mood swings and weight changes.
