Pentrexyl is a brand of Ampicillin, used for fighting infections. I think it largely depends on what the condition is that you are giving it to an infant for? I personally don't think that any infant should take a prescription drug. But none-the-less, there are certain precautions against mother's that are taking this who are breastfeeding their child, due to Ampicillin being excreted in the milk. Because of this precaution, I don't think it would be any different than the child directly taking it themselves, and should probably be treated in the same manner as a breastfeeding woman.

That said, it would be wise to contact the child's primary care physician about this circumstance and what dosage may be best for him or her. He might say that it is fine if the dosage is monitored and due to the type of infection you might be treating.

I hope this helps!
