Were they prescribed by the child's doctor?

If so, then yes this is a dosage that can be used in children to treat a bad infection.

However, it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.

And it shouldn't be given if it wasn't prescribed by the child's doctor, due to the dangers of developing antibiotic resistance.
