Calvepen contains the active ingredient Penicillin; which does have an interaction with food/drink, but not anything specifically related to alcohol consumption.

Information I've gathered states the following:

"Adjust dosing interval: Certain penicillins may exhibit reduced gastrointestinal absorption in the presence of food. The therapeutic effect of the antimicrobial may be reduced.

The interacting penicillin should be administered one hour before or two hours after meals. Penicillin V and amoxicillin are not affected by food and may be given without regard to meals."

Regarding the above statement, I would suggest drinking one hour before or waiting two hours after taking Calvepen to indulge in alcohol, in order to get the most out of it.

I've had two episodes of quinsy, fourteen years ago and five years prior to that, both episodes responded well to a form of penicillin (don't recall which). I 'm convinced I'm experiencing one currently. Sore throat commenced seven days ago and when on day four it kept me awake at night and required panadol for pain, I consulted a GP 48 hrs ago. He said I didn't have a peritonsillar abcess, merely an inflamed throat, and prescribed Calvepen 666mg tds. (I live in Australia and am currently visiting family in Dublin). I've had no response to the medication and the worse symptoms are @ night, pain requiring panadol x two doses and I remain awake between doses. Last night I had excessive salivation and mucous and ill defined ear ache on the affected side. I am conscious of feeling 'a sac of fluid' at times during the day and there is now slight deviation of the uvula. I don't have a fever or generalised feeling of being unwell, but do have a very, very sore throat. The muffled voice from pressure subsides fairly quickly after breakfast. Should I continue to ride it out? Is the abcess likely to resolve with time?
