There is no label on my butalbital + acetaminophen + caffeine. What is it used for? And is it a narcotic? ## Hello, Patricia! How are you? The FDA lists this medication as being most commonly used for the treatment and prevention of migraines and no, it is a barbiturate. Its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, stomach irritation, insomnia and nervousness. Is there anything else I can help with?

Is it possible to overdose on this drug in a way that causes death? What are the symptoms? ## Hello, From what I can gather, this combination can potentially be fatal, but you would have to ingest a very significant amount. A serious overdose of butalbital and acetaminophen may result in toxicity. Toxicity due to caffeine is less likely, due to the fairly small amounts in this formulation. The symptoms of overdosing on these medications are as follows: Butalbital: toxicity from Barbituate poisoning may include confusion, drowsiness, and coma; respiratory depression; hypotension; and hypovolemic shock. Acetaminophen: dose-dependent, potentially fatal hepatic necrosis is the most serious adverse effect. Renal tubular necroses, hypoglycemic coma, and coagulation defects may also occur. Ear...

Recently while on vacation in Arizona, I got a severe headache ( I think from a strain?), went to a clinic & they said my blood pressure was 185/110. Their first drug (lisinopril 20 mg) was for blood pressure and also an injection of toradol. Two days later the headache was still there and they prescribed a pill (Butalbit/acetam/caf 40 mg/tablet ). The headache and BP are in control but I am concerned on taking a barbiturate, is there an alternative and what would be the process to eliminate the drugs. General research shows Butalbit is being discontinued?? or not a preferred choice. ## Hello, Marie! How are you feeling? I'm very sorry about the problems that you're having. There is a chance that the headache was due to your blood pressure being so elevated. It can cause sev...

I was previously taking Butalbital Compund 50-325-40 twice a day for about 4 years for tension headaches. My doctor now has started me on Nortriptyline and no more Butalbital. Anyone else with tension headaches who had to make this switch and did Nortriptyline really help? Vince P ## Hello, Vince! How are you? Yes, everyone is having to make a switch. As to whether or not Nortriptyline will work, the only way to find out is to try it and see. These medications do help some people that suffer migraines and tension headaches, so you may experience good results with it. Side effects may include nausea, dizziness, dry mouth and weight changes. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Does anyone know why they have discontinued the Butalbital compound ( Fiorinal) tablets? I have taken this...

Can't seem to the price for butalbital/asa/caf/capcodeine30mg. Please provide your price. Thank you. ## Hello, Tom! How are you? I'm sorry, but this website does not manufacture, prescribe, nor sell any medications or products, it is an information only resource. Have you tried checking with your local pharmacies? This medication carries the risk of being habit forming and could cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, constipation and mood swings.

Butalbital-ASP-caffeine capwat green and yellow capsule with writing on it (green side says watson , yellow side says 3219) I have been taking one that says Butalbital Compound Tablet WSW. What is the difference? ## From what you've listed and from my own searching, it seems that there is one difference and that is that the first one you listed contains Aspirin, while the compound tablet that you listed next contains Acetaminophen. Otherwise, they both contain Butalbital and Caffeine and are used to treat migraines and tension headaches. Learn more Aspirin details here. Learn more Acetaminophen details here. What is the maximum allowed dose per day? ## 50mg of Butalbital + 325 mg of Acetaminophen appears to be an average dose of this combination. The highest dose I have seen is 50mg of Butalbital + 750 mg of Acetaminophen. Below is dosage information I located based on the 50/325mg combination: 1 or 2 tablet(s), capsule(s), or tablespoonful(s) orally every 4 hours. Maximum daily dose: 6 doses. Please post back if you have any other questions or comments to add. ## What medication can come up as a barbiturate?

I was taking butalbital/aspirin/caffeine and it was discontinued. Have all butalbital pills been discontinued with the aspirin in them? I've never tried the butalbital/apap/caffeine and I'm not even sure I can get them now to try them because the manufacturer told me that butalbital has been discontinued, or are the butalbital/apap/caffeine pills still available? I'll give them a try if so. ## Hello, Debbie! How are you? Yes, from what I can find right now, all Butalbital has been discontinued. Have you discussed the issue with your doctor? They may have an idea on what else you could try that may help.

Can I get butalbital anywhere, or has only Westward discontinued use of it, and where can I find this out? ## Hi Debbie, How are you? Sorry to hear about your challenges finding a replacement for Butalbital. I believe you had posted another question on here that I recently responded to, but I wanted to note that there are a few other options in the same drug class as Butalbital that might be worth looking into: Thialbarbital, Phenobarbital, Sodium thiopental, and Methohexital. Many of these are also regarded as general anesthetics, but in smaller doses they may be appropriate for their sedating and relaxing effects that can help alleviate tension headaches or migraines. Perhaps you can ask your doctor about using one or more of these as a replacement drug? If you have any other inquirie...

butalbital is a barbituate and is habit forming ## Hi mena, A light and dark capsule marked with "Lannett 1552" contains the following active ingredients: Aspirin (325mg) + Butalbital (50mg) + Caffeine (40mg). Butalbital itself is a barbiturate and I do agree that the muscle relaxing properties of this medication can be habit forming. However, this alone should not deter patients from using it if that's the only discrepancy. The mental and physical dependence that comes with taking anything for a long time or in larger doses is something that can easily be avoided by responsible users. In my honest opinion, we're all habitual creatures and it really just depends on each individual's mindset and their ability to continue administering it in safe doses. You can learn m...

I checked three pharmacies and none carry butalbital manufactured by westward. I am told it is on back order with no specific date. Is it discontinued? Also, I was given MIA110 as substitute but it doesn't work as well. Any reason why that would be? ## Hi Mary, According to Medscape, Butalbital has been discontinued. However, I don't know which manufacturer it's referring to and I have yet to come across any other specific details that support this claim. You could try contacting Westward Pharmaceuticals directly if you're looking to hear it straight from the source. Their Customer Service can be reached at: 1-800-631-2174 Regarding MIA 110, it does contain Acetaminophen + Butalbital + Caffeine in the same listed dosages as Westward 787. So it could just be that you'...

I have Ulcerative Colitis. Had a Migraine, took a Butal Caf and felt normal 1st time in 2 years! Ever heard of this? Also I have NO side effects from Butal. ## Hi Lainy, Based on my research, the combination of butalbital + acetaminophen + caffeine is intended as a treatment for tension headache. It is also commonly prescribed for migraines and other pain related ailments - although it is "not FDA indicated" for these uses in the U.S. On another note, the prescribing information for this drug recommends contacting your doctor before using this medication if you happen to have any abdominal/stomach problems (such as: stomach ulcer, colitis). From what I'm seeing, it's hard to say if those with colitis should even be taking this medication, but if you sense that it's w...

I would like to know the side effects of this drug. Since I started taking it my prostate is dealing me fits. ## From what I could gather, a list of possible side effects includes the following: Euphoria Dizziness Drowsiness Intoxicated feeling Light-headedness Nausea Vomiting Sedation Substance dependence Shortness of breath Abdominal pain Referenced from: Butalbital + APAP + Caffeine Details This may not be a complete list of side effects, but you should be able to pull up more information if you search under either of its more commonly known brand names: "Fioricet" or "Esgic".
