I have been taking xarelto for about three months. I have suddenly been seeing a lot of blood in my urine. My urine is now bright red. It has been this way for about three weeks. I also have pain in my kidney area and lower back. I went to my urologist and he took a scan looking for a kidney stone which came back negative. He is going to do another scan with contrast. I have seen that side effects of xarelto can be kidney problems, blood in the urine, and pain in the kidney area. Could this be caused by my taking xarelto?

Yes, it could be due to the Xarelto, though only a doctor can say with certainty. The FDA does report increased risk of bleeding as being a possible side effect of this medication, along with nausea, dizziness, headache, and easy bruising.
How are you doing, now? Has there been any change? Are you on any other medications?
