Big Increase In Gabapentin

My neurologist has me taking 1200 Mg of gabapentin and my pain specialist increased that to 3000 Mg a day. Will that big of an increase cause me any problems or side effects?

Hi Susie,

Based on my research, many patients are being told that 1,800mg is the maximum recommended dose for nerve pain. Although another drug article I found states that, "Efficacy was demonstrated in clinical studies over a range of 1800 mg/day to 3600 mg/day. However, no additional benefit was demonstrated from the use of doses over 1800 mg/day." - I'm not sure if your pain specialist is aware of this?

Regarding side effects, there's always a risk involved with any prescription medication. But if you're taking an increased dose, it's likely that your risk of experiencing certain side effects has also increased along with it.

Gabapentin's most common side effects in adult patients include dizziness, drowsiness, and peripheral edema (swelling of extremities); these mainly occur at higher doses, in the elderly.
