Betahistine Hydrochloride

I was prescribed betahistine hydrochloride to treat recurring vertigo.
Another doctor prescribed betahistine mesilate for the same reason.
I would like to know the difference between the two.

They are the same medication, the Hydrochloride and Mesylate just refer to the specific chemical salt that they are derived from, which can just vary according to the manufacturing process.

Side effects may include: mild nausea, loss of appetite and headache.

Betahistine mesilate is different from betahistine mesilate as here mesilate makes the difference... Due to mesilate(salt) there is higher drug solubility and bioavailability.. Also this salt combination with active ingredient betahistine provides 500 pico gm/ml wich is 5 times more as compared to betahistine HCl... It also offers less drug load to the body and thereby less almost negligible(10 times less) side effects as compared to betahistine HCl... Also lethal dose(LD50) of betahistine mesilate is twice as compared to betahistine HCl, so it is safe and effective option in the treatment of vertigo...
