Involved in almost fatal motorcycle accident back in Aug. 1996
Lucky to have survived.Have Had many different procedures, and variations of.pain meds for this ongoing chronic pain issue, specifically in relation to my right shoulder, which was totally replaced in December 2010
I followed up with the required physical therapy and stopped use of all narcotic pain meds for approximately 9 months following recovery
From the Fall of 2010 I was prescribed Oxycontin,in varying strengths, increases topped out at 180mg 3 times daily up to about 2 years ago when,of my own volition I started to taper down to 60mg 3 times daily
Had been on this dosage until Feb. 10.By this time having weaned myself down so withdrawals wouldn't be as bad as I had found doing research 9n this particular subject.
My pain specialist, after letting them know I had been off of the Oxycontin for a 2 week period,Then started me on BUTRANS TRANSDERMAL PATCH,dosage of 5mcg/hour 1patch every 7 days for first month
Following month was increased to the 10mcg patch
As compared to the daily dose of my Oxycontin extended release pills the only tangible differences are I no longer have to use ducosate for the constipation associated with the dose I was on,But the acute pain is actually far worse controlled, not to mention as well getting a good nights sleep is even more difficult. My daytime activities, because of the injury, are very limiting physically, and my motivation to move forward with my day is very much lacking from before I started this new phase of my pain management approach
