I am curious if anyone else has had any of these side effects from taking bactrim. My mouth is so swollen with blisters all inside my mouth.....now it has started to affect my private area as well with same symptoms. I cant eat and it burns all day long. I only took 4 pills when this started. Please help if you can.

It does seem this is coming out of nowhere, I wonder what is now in the drug that wasant there before to cause all these problems. I took my last Bactrim on Sunday and I am still suffering from mouth sores and inflamed lip. Horrible yeast infection too. I wonder why this drug is even in the market? Horrible pain and I have no idea when it will go away since it has been 48 hours since I took my last one.

I have never taken sulfa drugs before. I was prescribed Septra (similar to Bactrim) to see if I could clear a potential MRSA infection. I took one pill at 6pm on Tuesday, and woke up at 3am on Wednesday with a really itchy vagina. The next morning the symptoms were worse, so I checked and had blisters that looked like herpes. I had already had a herpes scare a month previously, and, although the culture and the blood work for HSV1 and HSV2 were negative, I was still skeptical. So I had the vaginal lesions cultured the next day. I just got the results back and it was negative for both types.

I asked my doctor if the reaction could have been from the Septra, and he said no, that the reaction occurred too soon after taking the drug. So I've been taking the drug for 6 days now out of 7. Simultaneously, I was prescribed Acyclovir for the "herpes" I had. The antiviral medication didn't do anything and the blisters are still there. They haven't gotten worse, but they haven't gotten better either.

The last three days I have also experienced fever, chills, total body aches, shooting pains in my legs and back, and what feels like arthritis in my wrist joints. My lymph nodes in my armpit and neck are really swollen and extremely tender. Yesterday, I broke out in a skin rash that began in my face and worked it's way down from there. I took Benadryl and was fine. I also have severe headaches that advil barely masks.

I'm going to stop taking the drug and see my doctor on Thursday. I'll post back here once I know more.

You should go see your dr. I've been tested twice for herpes because the symptoms go away and then come back but both tests were negative. I haven't had any more lab work done for sjs or dress because I don't have health insurance but I'm going to try and get some soon and go.

Wow it's a relief that yu tested twice and are still negative I'm still waiting on my first results. What did yu do to make then heal? And do they look like herpes!? That's what worries me most everytime I look at it I can see that it really does look like herpes. I'm just confused and really stressing about it. Praying for the best & no herpes!

Take a lot of liquid Benedrill and drink water.Doctor can prescribe cream with steroids to help heal fast.Its not herpes at all just your body is allergic to sulphur and bactrim is a high dose.Stop taking it.

Yes they look EXACTLY like herpes. I was freaking out because they go away then come back every month just like herpes. I'm a nurse so I got some bactriban ointment and silverstat gel from my job and just put it on when it happens. I hope you get better.

I have taken Bactrim D's several times in my life with no issues!! Now at 40, after taking it for 4 days, my lips(on face) are covered in cold sores and external vaginal area burn, itches covered with painful rash!!! I got put on this for a staph inf from itching!! To now have to deal with way worse!!!

I had the same reaction. Extreme vaginal itching at first and I thought I was having some kind of a serious vaginal infection but then it occured to me that things started out when I took this drug, BACTRIM for my UTI. I was so bothered that I looked it up here on the net and found these answers that made me a 100% sure of what the culprit was. Now, I think I would have to discontinue using this drug and ask for another prescription for my UTI. I'm afraid it could make things worst.

Five days after stopping this medication, a terrible vaginal burning began, but no itching, just the burning and soreness. I am using an otc yeast medication, but no relief yet. It feels like I am sitting on hot coals. I had never experienced anything like this before and will not take this medication again.

EXACT SAME THING HAPPEND TO ME!!!! I seen the doctor and he said automatically it was herpes and that it wouldn't be the bactrim. I was freaking out because I knew there was no way that that's what it was! Started taking benadryl today! Never again will I take that medication !!!!!

Likely a sulfa allergy; same thing happens to me. Historically, I had never had a problem taking this medication. First time symptoms developed I stayed the course, and in addition to mouth sores, my fingers and hands became arthritic. I have since tried it again, and mouth sores after 3-4 pills. Discontinue, get another rx, and list bactrim as drug allergy

Omg yes I had the same reaction to this medicine blisters and sores in my mouth and private areas. Can't eat can't talk it burns when I used the bathroom it just keep getting worse and I took six pills . it was prescribed to me for a UTI but this antibiotic just made everything ten times worse...I will never take that again I think it should be banned.

This happened to me last month when I took the medicine. I had cold sore ulcers so bad in my mouth I could barely talk or eat. I'm taking it again and the same thing has happened. I didn't know this was a side effect!

Look up boullous drug eruptions. I have allergies to various medications. This (Bactrim) builds in your system. Each time you take it your reaction will likely get worse. My first experience it took 1 1/2 weeks for the blistering to begin. The second time it was within 12 hours. I called my PCP. He took it very seriously and told me to stop the medication immediately. It can cause sloughing of skin and then severe skin infections. Evidently he had seen some cases because he did not mess around with it at all. He immediately knew what I was talking about and put me on a different antibiotic and still followed up on me the next day! And yes ladies it is not in your imagination. I too had other lasting side effects as well. He will no longer prescribe sulfa drugs for me. Please just trust your instinct.....you know your own body better than anyone. Hope this helps.

Doxycyline hyclate is often a viable alternative for Bac trim. Much less side effects.

Yep...blisters inside the mouth was one of many issues I had with the drug...could only last two days and my doctor said I was obviously allergic to this sulfa drug.

I had the same thing happen to me. In 2012 I had an allergic reaction to septra and the doctor swore up and down that i had herpes because the amount of blisters on my mouth and vagina and I knew for a fact I didn't have herpes because I've been with the same man for 5 years and I was the first person he's ever been with but they pounded it in my head so much that I believed them. Now it's 2017 and 3 days ago I got Bactrim gave to me for a sinus infection and I took 2 pills and my lips and vaginal area started to swell and itch and I had the same rash appear as before so come to find out I was having another allergic reaction and after test and all that, come to find out I'm allergic to sulpha drugs and never had herpes just like I tried to tell the doctor. So if they are trying to tell you that DO NOT BELIEVE THEM. I've had very bad depressing self-esteem issues about my self since 2012 when they tried to say it was herpes and I've spend all these years trying to get over the fact that I was going to have to live with the thought that I was always gonna have something for my whole life and I never even had it to begin with. I DO NOT RECOMMEND BACTRIM OR ANY SULPHA DRUG TO ANYBODY!!! The side affects and allergic reactions are way worse then the problem you had to begin with to get them prescribed to you. I wish I would have just dealt with my sinus infection because now I can barley walk, I get so scared to use the restroom because of how painful it is when the urine hits a open blister. When I swallow food it hurts very bad from the blisters in my throats (I've had to eat nothing but soft foods), my lips are all swollen, cracked and raw feeling on the inside and I have big red very sensitive rashes on my sides, hands, in between my fingers, inner thighs and on my bottom in between my buttocks checks. I would rather deal with a simple aggravating sinus infection any day then take this medication and have to deal with not being able to walk or even play and hold my 2 year old daughter. I have to put numbing ointment on my vaginal area every time before I use the restored and let it sit for a couple minutes to numb just so using the restroom won't be as painful when I urinate. They also told me I had Steven johnsons syndrom. But mine isn't just a few blisters it's horrible. If it doesn't get better in the next 2 days I have to go back and get admitted for a day or so to get fluids and things.

Yes, it is common if you read this thread. I'm pretty sure Bactrim tried its best to kill me. My doctor advised that I never take it again. Even after d/c the Bactrim, it took my mouth 3 weeks to finally clear up. My thinking is that if Bactrim causes eruptions and lesions in your mouth and downstairs, our insides probably are in the same shape as what is visual. Bactrim is your worst nightmare if you are allergic to it. If your doctor tells you these aren't side effects, it's b/c the drug companies do not detail doctors on ALL the side effects of medications. I think when I call my doc to report the problems, I don't think he believed it was as bad as I described. He called in meds. A week later when I was NO better, I walked into his office to let him put an eye on my mouth. He is quiet and demure, but looked inside my mouth and said, "OH, MY GOD, HOW have you lived with this?" I said, "I tried my BEST to tell you how bad this was. I lost 10 pounds in just one week, and I didn't have it to lose. Please report your reaction to the company!!!

I had I have lymphedema legs and I went to the hospital because breaking all out they said I have a yeast infection on my legs and sent me home with a prescription 4 powder come they gave me to put on it but I also took the bactrim. After taking the bactrim I just started breaking out all over big blisters on my butt & in between my legs. I'm waiting for the doctor to come in the morning. I think that bactrim is so strong it's making my lips swollen and cracked. I pray I get better.

I have ITP and was given Bactrim once a day to prevent infection. My platelets kept giving me trouble and couldn't figure out why. Two years later, I went to a doctor that told me it was Bactrim doing it. I was admitted into hospital clinically dead. 1 Platelet! I was bled to death under skin from IPT. It never gave me blisters.
