Back Pain/sciatica

I am 71 and for the past 6 months been in pain management for herniated discs lower back. I recently stopped the lowest doses of oxycodone/acetaminophen and morphine er. Did not help pain. Dr and I have just about exhausted trying many pain meds. Yesterday he prescribed 10mg methadone. I cut them in half. This morning I took 10mg. Wish I had not done that. I could deal with the little upset stomach but the dizziness lasted almost 9 hours..terrible. I will take 5mg once or twice a day thru weekend but pain level still at a 9. So if I still have pain by Mon will call dr and stop med. What scares me is he said prednazone would be next. I have read that this med has some really nasty side effects. I'm stretching daily and really don't want to take any of this stuff. Thinking about physical therapy again..I obviously have a high tolerance for pain. Seems like nothing works. And I still go out to events with the pain following. Keep moving. Thanks for letting me vent.

I guess because its a steroid. My son-in-law was on it and one side effect was he tended to get mean and moody woth his wife. He adores her so it wasn't his norm. I have managed to take the half (5mg) throughout the weekend but get upset stomach. I am going to continue, they seem to help but get nauseous. Tried several otc meds but don't work. Pharmacist suggested calling dr for phenergan(sp?). Thanks so much for your input. Its good to know this too shall pass. I would like to have this pain more manageable.
While I understand your concerns, all medications carry the risk of causing side effects, even over the counter products. There are just the hazards caused by adding a chemical to a body to help correct a problem/medical issue.
The other typical side effects of Methadone, as listed by the FDA, may include nausea, drowsiness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.
However, side effects are usually transient and go away with time, once your body gets used to the medication, but that may take 4 to 5 weeks. If they worsen or don't go away, then you should inform your prescriber.
Which side effects of Prednisone are worrying you?
