Azmacort Substitute (Page 6) (Top voted first)

Updated

Azmacort has been taken off the market because of environmental concerns (they say). There really is NO substitute. All other steroids do not work. My wife could die because of it. No one seems to care. Do you?

this is from the CDC...
Dear Ms. ,

Thank you for contacting the Division of Drug Information, in the FDA's
Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

We are very sorry to hear about your experience with the HFA inhalers.
Changes that affect the public normally take place in increments. The
regulatory process is not quick and does offer opportunities for comment
during the process. You may view some of the regulatory documents
relevant to the transition from chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) propellants in
the metered dose inhalers at http://www.fda.gov/Drugs/DrugSafety/InformationbyDrugClass/ucm063054.htm

Also, voluntary reports are essential for ensuring the continued safety
of FDA-regulated products. Reports submitted to MedWatch are added to a
post marketing safety database and reviewed by the FDA's post marketing
safety staff. One or two well-documented case reports may provide an
early signal of unexpected safety issues and lead to additional
evaluation. This may result in FDA regulatory actions that improve the
safety of the products used in patient care each day. We carefully
evaluate and analyze all reports that were available to us and make
recommendations for possible actions if the science based risk
evaluation warrants the actions. If the report contributed to the
action, the labeling change and/or public advisory will reflect the
action.

We urge you to submit your voluntary report via the following methods.

1. You may complete the voluntary form 3500 online.

You can find a link to the Internet voluntary reporting form by going to
the MedWatch homepage (http://www.fda.gov/medwatch/index.html), click on
Reporting Serious Problems to FDA, then Reporting by Health
Professionals or Reporting by Consumers.

2. Download a copy of the form and either fax it to us at 1-800-FDA-0178
or mail it back using the postage-paid addressed form.

Please note that you will not be personally contacted by a FDA staff
member unless additional information needed. With the volume of reports
on all issues, the Center does not have the resources to provide direct
feedback to each reporter, or to confirm whether a report was received
for a particular individual/incident or the status or outcome of a
report.

Again, we appreciate you taking the time to submit your report to the
MedWatch program.

Best regards,

Division of Drug Information LC
Center for Drug Evaluation and Research

Jack - I'm not sure this would constitute a class action suit or even a single party lawsuit. It would take a willing and creative attorney to dig to determine if anyone's rights have been violated. I am not an attorney, but it sure seems that much lesser frivilous lawsuits have made big publicity.

Gretchen H, Ive used Singulair for several years, its an integral part of my treatment plan. It works very well, If I miss a dose I can tell immediately the next day as I am more short of breath than usual. It has helped considerably with nighttime symptoms also. The only drawback I experienced with it was when I first started taking it I developed moderately severe headaches.. My doctor confirmed this was a common side effect of it but urged me to continue to use the product. I did and the headaches did gradually go away over a couple weeks time. It was well worth it for me. I have never had shakiness, or any cardiac side effects from it.

I, too have been on Azmacort for years and had no side effects. Now, after trying everything there is I'm left with either having a severe sore throat or headaches, not to mention other side effects. I am so disgusted that Azmacort was pulled off the market. Does anyone know if zamacort which is made in Mexico and the same as Amacort is available or is it just the brand name and has been pulled off too.
If anyone knows where they make the inhaler with triamcinolone anywhere in the world let me know.
Thanks.

I tried Googling Zamacort and everything is in Spanish. No help there. I am now on Qvar. Have been on it for only one day. So far nothing is happening. I still have my cough and mucous in the morning and night. Hope this works. The pollen is bad in Oregon with the trees blooming and now the azaleas and rhodies. We are going to Hawaii in a couple of weeks and I am afraid I am going to be miserable. Will take Zyrtec with us as well. I don't think much is going to be done even if we called the President of the US (yeah right). We are just a few people with a tiny voice. I might try the TV station. They like a good story...

Have been on Qvar for a week and a half now. It is working!!! I am only using it in the morning. Not brave enough to use it at night. The coughing has stopped in the morning. I don't know if it is because not so many things are blooming or what. The weather has improved in Oregon, so that is a blessing. Going to Hawaii next week. That will be the true test if the inhaler works!!!

Carol:

You have been looking forward to this for some time now. Go. Enjoy without the specter of worry. I think you are the only one on this site that has had success.

I just got June out of the hospital again. I don't know how long she will last.

I posted prior about my Grandmother and how it took her forever to find and use Azmacort to begin with many years ago and going through doctor and hospital visits constantly because she was completely unable to breath at the time!! Now with the whole issue with Abbott being so lazy that they could not even have the azmacort ready with a TEN YEAR Notice!! Its been about 2 months now with her dealing with this problem and trying for solutions! ( FIRST I WANT TO THANK ALL OF YOU WHO REPLIED TO MY POSTS AND OFFERED YOUR HELP AND YOUR SYMPATHY?EMPATHY) We greatly appriciate it!! For a while she was stuck using Azmnex, which believe it or not works very, very, very well!! It just happens to have one major problem that we can't get around!!! It does not have a perpellant to dicharge the medication! In order for it to work you need to use your own lung power to inhale the measured dose!! That would be the equivalent of a person with very little use of their legs to run a mile for his medication to work!!! Some one was obviously not thinking during the production process!!! She really tried to make it work, even to the poit of using a straw to try and inhale it, but it just wasn't going to happen!!- Then she had a chest x-ray along with my grandfather and because she had tried so hard to make that medicine work and it was never getting any where close to where she neded it in her lungs her emphazima got twice as bad and she developed C.O.P.D. also she nor my grandifather have ever smoked or drank at all in their lives!!!! Any way the doctor put both of them on symbacort tward the middle of april,2010, and while it worked amazinly for my grandfather, it just made my Grandmother dizzy and nautious!! So Now finally she is using flovent I believe it is called and so far it seems to be working great! But only time will tell if it stays that way!! If abbott only would not be so damn lazy and sel-fish! I might be wrong but it really bothers me when people mess with my grandparents lives and their quality of life!! She is cautious enough to still have a full presrciption of Azmacort just to be on the safe side!!!!

Deceed, I am very sorry to hear of the problems your grandmother is having and Jack, very sorry to hear about June. We hope all is well with everyone.

I understand your frustration when a medication that worked so well if pulled from the market. I don't know if we can call this selfish, because this site does not know the reasons it is no longer being made. It may have to do with sales or it could be due to safety concerns of some type.

Deceed, here's the link to more information on Flovent:

Here is info on Qvar for Carol:

Please kep us updated on how everyone is doing!

it has been a long two months but i guess my body has finally adjusted to flovent and i am doing well. I still would go back on my azmacort in a heartbeat though. Jack, I hope your wife finds some relief. It is horrible to go through and for the first time I was really scared. God bless!!!!

Gretchen and Verwon:

Thank you for you concern. My appreciation is not just a casual acceptance. Love you for it.

We were all amazed yesterday when June was able to go to church, teach her kids in Sunday School, sing in the choir and attend evening services as well. I don't think too many people saw me weeping as I captured what I could of the old times. She felt lousy but she sure looks good - especially to me.

We go to our family physician today and her new Cardiologist tomorrow to fine tune what they can.

I can't help but watch her when she sleeps to see if she is still breathing. We have had two men in our church lose their wives last month. They say these things happen in threes. I do not believe that but nonetheless it messes with my mind.

It is very hard to get ready to be willing to let her go if the Lord wants to take home the very best thing He has given me in this life. She is a fellow heir of the grace of life (1 Pet 3:7) to me in marriage. Her belief in John 3:16 is real. I don't know how anyone copes with the finality of life without Christ. I know where she is going. if it happens, she will just have to wait until it is my turn.

Jack

What you wrote was beautiful about your wife. Brought tears to my eyes. I would hope that God does not take away what is the most dear to you. You both are in my prayers!

These different inhalers , such as Flavent, Ovar, Symbicort, Advair, etc., which are being tested to try and find an inahler that might help us survive breathing crises -- is worthy

If President Obama personally knew about this medical crisiis
that is starting to afect many of use due to Abbott closing out
Azmacort, I believe Obama with a call to Abbott's CEO White-- he would be happy to help..
Thank you.

Just arrived back from Hawaii. Qvar worked the whole time even with the trade winds blowing. Felt the best I have in months. Now I will have to wait and see how I feel now that we are back in Oregon.

Jack, I pray every night for you and June. God Bless You Both!!!

Carol

Thank you. Concern for others takes us out of ourselves a little bit and helps our own well-being.

When we see the beauty in Hawaii and in a lot of places in the US (Oregon coast where you are, for instance) we tend to forget we are living on a cursed earth - not many people living to be 900 these days.

Although most of it came up from below (Gen. 7:6, 10, 11), we've lost our protective covering of water vapor from outer space radiation - and it effects our reading of carbon14 dating among many other things.

But when the ocean floor sank, and the water receded (Gen. 8:2, 3, 5), it carved out and left behind a lot of beauty. The receding water changed he topography to give us things we did not have before (Gen. 8:22)

June is getting a heart catheter on Wednesday to see if there is a blockage somewhere they can clear up so that more Oxygen can get into her system. All of this asthma thing has side effects as you know.
