For the best efficacy, you should take them daily, as prescribed, unless your doctor has instructed otherwise. If you are skipping doses, then that will reduce how well they work for you, that is why the FDA instructs you to take the medication as prescribed and not to miss a dose. They also warn that it carries the risk of being habit forming, so I understand your concern, but this is just not a medication that works, if taken occasionally. It side effects may include nausea, dizziness, nervousness, irritability, and anorexia.
Are you on any other medications? Is your doctor aware of how you are taking it?
