Atenolol Versus Labetalol

I want to know if it would be ok to take atenolol in place of the labetalol I've been taking, but ran out of?

Hi Kerri,

Both Atenolol and Labetalol are in the same drug class called Beta-blockers which are marketed for use in treating high blood pressure.

According to medlineplus.gov, both medications work by relaxing blood vessels and slowing heart rate to improve blood flow and decrease blood pressure.

- Atenolol reportedly has an estimated elimination half-life of 6-7 hours (taken orally in tablet form)
- Labetalol reportedly has an estimated elimination half-life of 6-8 hours (taken orally in tablet form)

What I don't know is how they compare to one another in terms of potency, efficacy, and dosing. So this particular aspect of things is probably something you'd want to discuss with your prescribing doctor first.

Thank you David, this helps me alot. I did take the rhe 50 mg altenol and it made me feel alot better untill i can get in to see my doctor, thank you for your time.
