Aspergum - Another Good Product Discontinued (Top voted first)
UpdatedAspergum was the best product I have found for a sore throat. I didn't chew it for headaches, just for a sore throat. Actually, according to information I have been reading about sugarless gum, I'd rather chew Aspergum. The sugar substitutes used today are way more harmful than Aspergum could be. I agree about a "bring back Aspergum" campaign. Maybe someone would actually listen to the comments of the "little guy" sometime. If it was around for so many years, why all of a sudden did it no longer become worthwhile. Check out the information on sugar substitutes used in sugarless gums and then decide if you want to chew those products anymore. BRING BACK ASPERGUM!

Aspergum is gone forever. So Sad! Great product of the past. Too many children were probably chewing it because they thought it was candy. NEW PRODUCT to use for a dry and irritated throat is GoGargle. My mom found this salt based effervescent tablet that I drop in warm water and gargled.....amazing, and it tasted and felt really good. GoGargle had zinc and honey and other ingredients with a minty hint of flavor. She bought it off their website, but I found it in stores in Arizona. No more ugly throat, really.
Was Aspergum addictive, because I chewed it a lot when I was a kid?! I just wonder if this was the problem because I wanted it and I loved the taste!
Pixi is on the right track, it was removed due to the number of children that thought it was just gum, the active ingredient was Aspirin, which could cause Reye's Syndrome in children 12 and under, which can be fatal. The Reye's Syndrome page from Medline Plus has many great details and references to explain the possible dangers. It is the biggest reason there are warnings not to give Aspirin to children. Overdose from chewing too much of the gum was also a very real danger.
I am sorry, Giselle, I know this doesn't help with your problem, I am just letting everyone know why it was removed from the market, and due to the risks, there's really no hope of bringing it back.
Shar, no, it was not addictive, but children do tend to love to chew stuff, which is why gum, in general, is so popular. It is part of the developmental process.
Giselle, what else have you tried for sore throats?
Have there been any new updates since the January 2019 post? I thought I was the only one who remembered this invaluable product. By now, you would think the obvious solution would be to package it with a safety feature, to prevent children from opening, as is done with every other medicine product on the market. (Actually, some riskier products in dollar stores etc. do not package certain items any more safely these days). I don't understand it, and, I am online tonight suffering from a sore throat that will require a stronger dose of OTC pain relief, without nearly the same relief. Who can we write to about this?
