All i keep hearing is people are dependant on pain meds etc.....but we are all dependant on some pill to work once in awhile or everyday, so why is everyone so hard on one set of people and not the other?

There is a distinct different between being dependent and being addicted.

Regardless of what they are taking it for, be it hypertension, a heart condition, pain or etc. Anyone that takes anything for a long period of time will become dependent on it and can suffer some rebound and withdrawal effects, if it is stopped suddenly.

However, addiction occurs when someone abuses a medication, such as a narcotic, but taking more and more of it all the time, rather than just taking the prescribed amounts to handle their condition.

I think many of the problems arise when people don't understand these differences.
