Are Expired Antibiotics Toxic?

Is it safe to take sulfamethoxazole/tmp when it expired 3 years ago? Is it toxic or does it lose some of its effectiveness?

No, it does not become toxic, but yes, it can lose some effectiveness, so it may not fully eradicate the infectious bacteria, which means that it may develop antibiotic resistance. Thus, it would be better to see your doctor for a new prescription.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of most antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
