I had spine surgery on 7/21. I had been taking 900 mgs daily for years. By 7/24 inadequate a hemorrhagic stroke. The hospital simply overlooked my need for neurontin. I had also bee on high doses of OxyContin and was medically supervised for 5 yrs. Then my dr decided to detox me day after surgery; hence I had no pain meds despite extensive spine repair involving my complete lumbar spine. The pain i endured destroyed my faith in god in the midst of this torture/ I realized I was having neurontin withdrawals that I believe caused the stroke. Is this a possibility? ## What other medications were you taking and what others were administered during the surgery and while hospitalized? It isn't likely that withdrawals from the Neurontin caused a stroke. Learn more Neurontin details here. D...

Does the topiramate help back pain because ive just been changed to pain management and my new doctor just changed me from tramadol to topiramate 50 mg and I haven't seen anything about back pain on here. Can someone help me before I start taking this? ## It can sometimes help with certain types of nerve pain, according to FDA reports, it is also used to help prevent seizures. Have been taking gabapentin 3600mg's before bed, around 9. I also take omezaprole 20mg OTC in the morning when I wake up around 8am. Recently had a blood test to make sure was taking the gabapentin. The test was done approximately 14-15 hrs after the last dose, and 4hours after taking 20mg of omezaprole. Will I test positive? I have been taking for over three years, and I seem to metabolize everything faster than the average person. ## i have to get blood work in the labs it been about 18 day will gabapentin show up ## It stays in your system for about 48 hrs for urine. blood is more reliable and shows up longer. not sure how long but everything I have read says a couple of days bc the it is not metabolized through the liver.

I am now a healthy 60 year old woman and I fell and hit my head on the farm 25 years ago. Since then I have suffered from partial complex seizures that occur during sleep (not every night). I am currently taking 3000 mg of divalproex and 1000 of carbamazapine daily however my seizures are still uncontrolled and appear to be happening more often. Now my neurologist wants to place me on Keppra but I'm afraid that as a result, I might have unexpected seizures that are either stronger or that occur during the day; I haven't had a daytime seizure or a grand mal sort of seizure in years and don't want those again. I want to be assured the Keppra won't induce those and I hope you can provide me with your insight. ## Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee that it won't....

I’ve been prescribed Trileptal off-label to treat my bipolar disorder. I had my doubts as to the efficacy of this drug in that capacity, though others have sworn by it, but am now at a position where I cannot continue to safely take this medication. Two weeks ago I was prescribed 600mg daily (two 300mg tablets). During those two weeks, I had a bit of a behavioral “episode,” and so I was upped to 900mg at my last visit. Haven’t had any issues with it up to now, and hadn’t noted any side effects let alone actual effects of the medication. It might as well have been sugar pills. That is, until about 4AM this morning. I awoke dry lipped with a vicious itch on my posterior. I absconded to the bathroom to scratch this itch and noted a silver dollar size welt on m...

I have taken Trileptal for many years to treat trigeminal neuralgia. My legs become very heavy in the afternoon and evening. There is no swelling. They also are constantly cold. I also have Raynaud's so I always have cold hands and feet. ## Does Trileptal cause Tinea Vericolor when taken by children under 3 years old? ## I've just been put on Trileptal and am having nausea and vomiting. Does this last for weeks or does it go away? Please tell me that it goes away soon. I can't keep anything down and have no appetite. ## To the OP, what do you mean by your legs becoming very heavy? Are they weak? Is it hard to walk? Are you becoming dizzy? The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, and mood changes. I just started taking topamax and I never seen this "twice daily x7 1wk" before. What does this mean? ## Usually, this medication is prescribed to be taken in 2 divided doses a day, which means at separate times, and it is normally titrated up, so I believe the meant that you should take this dosage twice a day for 7 days, then move on to the next, or check in with your doctor to see how it is working for you, according to FDA directives. But, overall, it would be best to double check with your doctor, or pharmacist. Are you on any other medications? ## My prescription says "two to be taken four times a day". Does this mean I take 8 a day? I am confused. Can someone please help? I don’t wanna overdose.

I am a 41 year old Family Doctor who requires 2 seizure medications. Topamax 200mg BID has been my mainstay for almost a decade. I have tried (in addition) Depakote, Lamictal and several others. Now Keppra. Although my seizures are controlled, I have developed the most severe cystic acne I have ever seen. Face, ears, neck, chest...incredibly painfully. These cysts have started blocking my tear ducts--my eyes are terribly swollen in the morning. I feel the tracts of these cysts up both nostrils. I have tried everything over the counter, all prescription remedies (Retin-A, minocycline, doxycycline) All to no avail. In addition to the acne, I (who consider myself an even-tempered, non-confrontational human) have become the most hostile, angry person....to the point I cannot stand myself. H...

Erectile dysfunction is not listed as a side effect but has anyone noted an effect in this area? ## Yes I have, I take Viagra when we get at it now. I take 2700 mg of Gabapentin a day for Multiple Sclerosis. It might also be caused by the MS alone. I find Viagra to be hard on the system not just the sausage. ## Actually the FDA does list impotence as being a possible side effect of Gabapentin, along with nausea, mood changes, weight changes, anemia, and back pain. How are you doing, now? Has there been any change? If this is a severe problem for you, you might need to speak to your doctor to discuss trying a different medication, as this might not be the right one for you to take.

I took Topamax for a few months, it made me completely stupid. I work in an OR so I was out of work till I was able to concentrate. Now I can do things but some things I have to relearn again. Has anyone else had this problem? How long did it last? Will I go back to normal? Any feed back would be appreciated. ## The FDA does warn that you should consult your doctor immediately, if you experience a slowing of mental activity, confusion, trouble concentrating, and memory problems. Generally, they do tend to wear off with time, but it depends on how long you were taking it, how much you were taking, and whether or not it was the medication that caused the problem. Have you had yourself checked out by a physician to see if there is anything else going on? I know you work in an ER, but unfor...

My father who is 79 was started on 300 mg of gabapentin, three times a day. After the 4th dose, he was having hallucinations, tremors, and became tachycardic and arrhythmic. Although the MD prescribing would not say stop the medication, his cardiologist advised immediately stopping. He continues to be lethargic, confused and although better, still has some tremors about 36 hours after taking his last dose. His heart rate is down to around 84 now. How much longer until these side effects resolve? ## Hi Snigs, I'm very sorry to hear about your father's situation. Based on your description, it sounds to me like his cardiologist may know best. A lot of these side effects can be serious/life threatening and may require immediate medical attention if they persist. For the doctor to di...
