I was prescribed both amox-clav 875mg and doxycycline hyclate 100mg. I read the pharmacy info that came with the medications. Both state DO NOT TAKE with the other. Why would the doctor prescribe both? ## The reason a possible interaction is warned of is because the Doxycycline and the Amoxicillin in the Augmentin can cancel each other out at some doses, so it may be like not taking any antibiotics, at all. I've been taking clindamycin 300mg for 7 days due in preparation for upcoming dental work and I am having serious rash hives welts! Dr. changed to amoxicillin 500mg. I'm still having rash welts and hives along with an overnight visit to the hospital for shortness of breath, fever, chest pain & high blood pressure. I can't take it. i've been on doxycycline for a little over 2 weeks now (100mg 2x daily) for lyme disease...about a week ago i started getting sick with what i believe is the flu (fever, chills, nightsweats, sore throat, nasal congestion, headaches, body aches, etc)..it's been 7 days of it with no end in sight...the headache is really debilitating...can i take a percocet for the headache while on the doxy? Been on clindamycin since Saturday evening and this is Thursday night for an abscessed tooth. It went down for a day and now has a new abscess on my gums. Can I take doxycycline 100mg for a toothache? I'm also taking Lisinopril 20 mg and Bupropion 75mg. ## John Docycline is not a pain reliever it wouldn't have any pain relieving properties.Ibuprophen is excellent for tooth pain it's an OTC med. ## Can I take the antibiotic for a bad tooth that is abscessed with the other two drugs? ## @John, If there's really a bacterial infection present, then killing the infection with an antibiotic makes sense and will probably help alleviate pain that the infection was causing. As to the efficacy of Doxycycline being used for this purpose, I do think there may be better options on the market. A small round tablet, peach colour (might also be considered pink or light-orange), with no score mark on either side, imprinted on one side with '100' and on the other side with 'novo'. I believe this description is a match for "DOXYCYCLINE" (Doxycycline-Hyclate) - one of several prophylactic medications prescribed when entering a malaria endemic area. I have been on this medication since tuesday (and have not experienced any side effects) when I thought my wound was infected, but it was not. My doctor gave me about 25 pills to take as a precaution to avoid it getting infected in the future. If I do not take the pills for 36 hours, will I be able to drink alcohol without having side effects? I have not taken sulfamethoxazole since Wednesday. Can I safely go out and have beers Saturday night? ## According to The University of Maryland Medical Center (umm.edu / drug interaction tool), taking Sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim with alcohol may cause serious side effects, including but not limited to a racing or pounding heart beat, sweating, severe flushing and rapid breathing. Since everyone is different there's virtually no way of knowing if you'll still be safe (even with a few days gap), but I would speculate that if you exercise caution and drink responsibly that you'd probably have nothing to worry about. Have you discussed this with your prescribing doctor?

I'm very sorry about the hives! And yes, many milder allergic reactions to antibiotics tend to pop up after you've been taking it for awhile, rather than right away. I found out I was allergic to Bactrim after being on it for 10 and a half days, with one dose left to go. I was taken Amoxicillin that my dentist Rx to me but its been 3 days now N I have developed a sore throat witch the Amoxicillin is not doing anything for. I have amoxicillin .. was suppose to take every 6 hours took every four :( except a few longer times when I forgot. I've had shortness of breath today, muscle aches and diarrhea.
