My son who is now one year old had an ear infection in April of this year and he is messing with his ears again. Is it safe for me to give him the amoxicillin I have? What antibiotic has a shelf life of 10 years? ## I don't know of any that have that long of a shelf life and I can't find one listed. It generally varies by drug, so there may be one, however. As to Amoxicillin, it has a shelf life of 2 years, from the date of production and your pharmacist has to give it to you with a minimum of one year left on the expiration date, until it starts to lose potency, except when it is a liquid preparation, which have a 7 to 10 day lifespan. This is an antibiotic, so it may cause side effects, such as: nausea, drowsiness, skin rash and diarrhea. Upon being release, not only did/do I have this severe, I believe the Dr, called it, UTI infection, but I have 2 other infections, dehydration, sinunitus, pneaumonia, and infected ears. I do have a variety of medications for each ailment, however, the only one I take more than once a day is the Nitro.Mac/Mono. I am so itchy my skin looks horrible and I cannot find any type of relief. I've NEVER itched like this unless I had poison ivy and now the calamine isnt even phasing this. Since a total knee replacement in January 2008, my surgeon has prescribed Amoxicillin prior to my 6 month dental exams and cleaning. Within 8 hours from taking the Amoxicillin, I become ill every time. The illness is never exactly the same. A year ago, I was stick for a week with flu-like symptoms. I'm supposed to be taking Clarithromycin for long term use, but the bitter taste in my mouth is pretty bad. Since I'm on it for long term use, is there anything that will mitigate this side effect? I am taking Macrodantin capsules for a UTI bid for 9 days but it's not working. I want to switch to Amoxicillin 500mg. How long do I have to wait to begin the Amoxicillin? ## If your doctor approves, there shouldn't be any reason to wait, you should be able to make a clean switch from one to the other at the next dosing time. But if they are in a container as dispensed by a pharmacy, they are only good for about one year from the date they are given to you, since that exposes them to the elements that cause degradation, such as heat, light and moisture. I've been on amoxicillin for 3 days now for a gum infection.. within the first day my whole right side of my face swelled up and on the second day my eye was so swollen I could barely open it... its the third day and now not only am I dealing with all this swelling but now my gums are bleeding... is this normal? ## Hi micki, To be completely honest, the reactions you're experiencing don't seem "normal" by any means, but are unfortunately side effects of Amoxicillin.
