I used Bactrim; it takes more time to work than clindamycin. It has taken four days for the swelling to go down, but it has gone down and is almost normal now. I have double strength pills and will take them 2x a day for ten days. I also used the clove oil on my gums and that is working very well. They are going from red to pink again. You can buy this a CVS or Walgreens in the toothpaste isle. I also have been taking four advil 2x day for the swelling.

How fast it helps really depends on the nature of the bacteria and the severity of the infection.
The FDA lists the typical side effects of antibiotics as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
