Antibiotics And Infections

I've been having a sore throat for the past few days. The symptoms got worse every day. I started to sneeze, cough, and got a fever. I filled a prescription for some Penicillin called Ampicillina 500 mg per capsule from Mexico. I was instructed to take them every 8 hours, however, 3 pills a day seemed a bit much for me so I took one at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 23rd, and then another one 8 hours later. The next dose would have been at 7:00 a.m., on Wednesday, May 24th, but I didn't take one till 9:30 a.m.. I forgot to take another 8 hours later, and I remembered this at 10:39 p.m., so I took another dose at 10:39 p.m.. I set an alarm this time but must have slept through it as I didn't wake up until 8:30 a.m., and I took the next dose at 8:39 a.m..

I do feel worse today, however. My question is, how often should I take this medication to treat an infection? Have I created a bacterial resistance to antibiotics since I haven't taken them as a US doctor might prescribe? And how long should I continue treatment?

Ampicillina contains Ampicillin, not Penicillin, and it is always best to follow the instructions provided by your doctor regarding the dosage, and how often you should take it.

Antibiotics are most effective when a regular amount is maintained in the body for a certain period of time.

The FDA lists the typical antibiotic side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash.

At this point, you may not have enough left to take it consistently and fully eradicate the infection, so you should consult your doctor as you may need a new prescription, or you may need to switch to a different antibiotic.
