Antabuse And Psychosis

My brother has recently had a psychotic episode which I am beginning to think may have been triggered by antabuse. Has anyone else had experience or heard of this?

Yes my boyfriend had this! He was sober about 6 weeks and the doctors put him on anabuse and prozac. He had legal issues, and he was forced to take these meds. After about 4-6 weeks, he began to feel what he described as a little too happy. and began having visual halllucinations and delusions. He became so paranoid in fact, that he began to fear sinning so he started giving money to random people, being totally honest and eventually abandoning any thought that he was anything except the second coming of christ. His mmomtook him to behavioral health and he stayed there (stablized) for 2 weeks. He proceeded to check himself out AMA and had mild pchysosis for about 2 more weeks, still off of the meds. But he left the hospital on Lithium, depikote and seroquel... and eventually took himself off those too. He is fine now, although he claims it was a God thing and never regrets his little trip. This was a little 4 years ago- he is now 4 years sober. Coinsidence? Hard to say. Maybe he was just ready to stop, and whatever he had scared him enough. He claims it wasn't scary, though, and it has become part of his identity. (In a good way, I think) His diagnosis by the time he left was brief psychotic episode, Not otherwise specified.

Antabuse has been known to cause psychiatric issues as a side effect in some people that take it, the FDA lists them as possibly including psychotic reactions, depression, paranoia, schizophrenia, and mania.

Of course, only a doctor can ascertain if it was actually the medication that caused it, so you should always consult them and follow their advice.
