Amphetamine Salts Er 40mg

My 9 year ols nephew is on 40 mg a day this seems too much! He seems distant and depressed all the time, should I be concerned?

Hi Kerry,

From what I could gather, the usual pediatric dose can range from 5mg up to a maximum of 60mg once daily. The extended release capsules are not recommended for anyone age 6 or under, so I can only speculate that his body (from a biological standpoint) may not even be ready to handle this medication.

Safety guidelines for this medication note that if any bothersome adverse reactions appear (e.g., insomnia, anorexia, or depression in this case), the dosage should be reduced.

I think it's perfectly ok and natural to be concerned for someone who looks depressed and distant. This would probably be attributed to side effects and/or too high of a dose in general. For this reason I do think it would be beneficial for him to have his dose re-adjusted by his doctor.

Perhaps a more natural approach should also be considered if this drug isn't working as well as intended.

I would seek a second opinion even if insurance doesn't cover it, he should see a psychiatrist just to confirm diagnosis and to determine the correct dosage. Then his family doctor can follow up from there. Behavior modifications such as having structure, a consistent bedtime, a clean room (house) less chaos, can all be helpful. kids are so busy these days.Plus, and you're gonna hate this, but diet can improve symptoms also. Limiting sugar is huge including soda and fast food. These small adjustments might be beneficial and worth a try if it can help alleviate /minimize his symptoms or even allow him to take a lower dose. Please confirm all this with a specialist first before letting a family doctor (however good they are) treat that child. An honest M.D. will admit they have limited education on this and should have already suggested the same advice given here. Good luck.
