Amoxicillin Gum Infection

I have a gum infection. My dentist prescribed Amoxicillin 500 mg, 4 times a day. Would this be considered to be a "normal" dose of the medication? It seems to me to be quite a high dosage, i.e., 2000 mg a day. I just need some guidance on this.

Hi. I had a tooth taken out and after 2 days I got an infection on my gum and it kinda looks like a small red ball. I went to the dentist and she prescribed me amoxicillin 250mg. I have been taking it for around 2 days & I haven't seen any difference apart from the small red ball on my gum getting worse. It's painful. Is this normal? How long would it take for it to heal?
I have read up on the expiration of amoxicillin & realize there are pros & cons w/ everything. However when my dad passed several years ago, we disposed of all his meds except a bottle of Amoxicillin 500. It is a full 10 day supply @ 1 cap every 8 hrs, that have been kept in my drawer since I got it. The filled date is March 2005. Is it still safe to consume? I currently have an abcess from a tooth broken off @ the gum & have no dental insurance. I realize I will have to get the tooth taken out, just trying to buy time. Thank you for any input.
Hello i have a tooth infection from a cavity/filling came out also. My face got swollen gum started bleeding over top of where the tooth infection was. I read that toothaches that causes swelling are "DEADLY" which scares me. My doctor prescribed 500mg amoxicillin 3 times a day. Before i got them prescribed my face was swollen for about 3-4days almost closing my eye and swelling my nose. How long can you have this swelling before it reaches brain and become deadly?? By the way im on my second pill so far.
It can vary, depending on the severity of the infection being treated and thus, can range from 2 to 4 doses daily.
And you also have to remember that in this case, where it is a gum infection being treated, you have to eradicate the existing infection and prevent reinfection, since you have to eat every day and expose your gums to further possible contaminants.
A higher dosage might cause more severe side effects, such as worsening of the nausea, dizziness and diarrhea that antibiotics can cause.
Are there any other questions?
