Amitriptyline To Relieve Tramadol Withdrawal?
UpdatedI've been on 100 mg of tramadol 2x per day for a little over 1 month this time. I'm having s horrible time detoxing c/t although I've tried many times. After 2 times with refills my gp refuses another script. My neurologist recently prescribed Amitriptyline 50 mg per night for sleep and pain. My question is can the amitriptyline help with horrible day 2 withdrawal I'm experiencing? I never want to see tramadol again b/c of the sickening control I gave it over my life. Told husband at least my head and neck pain let me feel normal instead of some side show. If anyone has experience bei.g on amitriptyline while detcing from tramadol will you please help? Thanks to all!!

Hi Ashley,
I have heard of Amitriptyline helping those who are going through withdrawal by helping them get to sleep easier, which is already what it is used for. However, I did a little more research and actually found that taking Amitriptyline and Tramadol together can cause some serious reactions. Quoted below are the precautions you should be aware of:
"Talk to your doctor before using tramadol together with amitriptyline. Tramadol may cause seizures, and taking it with other medications that can also cause seizures such as amitriptyline may increase that risk. The interaction may be more likely if you are elderly, undergoing alcohol or drug withdrawal, have a history of seizures, or have a condition affecting the central nervous system such as a brain tumor or head trauma. You should avoid or limit the use of alcohol while being treated with these medications. Avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery until you know how the medications affect you. Call your doctor immediately if you experience seizures while using the medications. It is important to tell your doctor about all other medications you use, including vitamins and herbs"
I understand that you're no longer taking tramadol, but since you are still withdrawing from it, that means that it is still in your system. I would speak with your doctor to make sure it's ok that you take the Amitriptyline.
On a different note, If I can recommend anything to help speed up the process of the Tramadol withdrawal, it would be to detox by eating plenty of fruits and vegetables while staying hydrated throughout the day. Also, make sure you are getting plenty of rest and try to get at least 1 hour of exercise in each day to help sweat out any toxins and get your lymphatic system flowing (which will significantly aid in detoxification).
I hope all this info is helpful!
