Amitriptyline For Sleep

Hello, I've been taking amitriptyline for about 2 years. I've also been addicted to Ambien and Xanax. I've tried everything for sleep so I didn't take this med when it was first prescribed because I thought it wouldn't work. The first time I took it I was out of Ambien and Xanax and very paranoid. However it actually made me sleep for about five hours which was a very pleasant surprise. That was 50mg. Now I'm completely off Xanax and Ambien and am talking 100-150 of amitriptyline a night. It works very well. It's the only non controlled substance that has ever worked to help me sleep. Because it's not controlled it's much easier to get. When I'm out of it I don't sleep at all. This medication has been a godsend to me.

I am so very glad that you found a medication that helps you.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and weight changes.

How are you sleeping, now? How many hours do you usually sleep? Are you on any other medications?
