Allopurinol Causing Constipation
UpdatedI've been on Allopurinol 300mg once a day since early 90's, with no side effects at all. I have not had a kidney stone since I've been on the Medication. Two weeks ago I refilled my prescription and the medication that I usually get is from Ingenus. Much too my surprise I got Accord instead, from my Walgreens Pharmacy and after a few days I noticed that I was getting constipated. Ingenus has discontinued Allopurinol. I know that side effects from Allopurinol never mention constipation and I was wondring if the cause could be the fillers and binding agents. Have anybody run into constipation with Allopurinol? What manufacturer would be a better alternative to Accord for thiis drug. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry to hear about your situation. According to NIH, constipation is listed as a rare side effect of Allopurinol; as well as right upper abdominal or stomach pain & fullness.

In my investigations, NIH tends to provide a more transparent list of possible side effects than drug manufacturers do. However, when it comes to finding an alternative manufacturer, the only problem I see is that there's no way of knowing how you'll respond to it based on someone else's reaction, as we're all subject to react/respond differently to the same medications.
Working closely with your doctor through trial & error is probably the best approach to finding what works best for you. Odds are that it could be certain binders/fillers causing this issue and maybe it's just a matter of trying any other manufacturer available to gauge how you feel in comparison.
Re: David (# 1)
Thanks David for your thoughtful and good advice. After two weeks of not taking Allopurinol and still having occasional constipation. I decided to give allopurinol another try because I remember how painful my kidney stones were. I was diagnosed in the early nineties with asymptomatic chrons disease. Since restarting the Allopurinol I haven't had bad bouts of constipation, so I chalk this up to chrons mild flare (mostly constipation but occasional diarrhea)and hopefully my combination of Apriso, Amitiza, Colace will keep it under control.

Thank you for your feedback. I just wanted to add that if you ever have bad constipation again, Senna tea works amazingly for cleaning out any indigestion. What I do is buy the whole Senna leaves in bulk and steep a fairly large handful of them in cold water for about 8-12 hours in the fridge. Then when I'm ready to drink it, I only have about 1/4 to 1/3 cup of it and within another 8-12 hours it will start working its magic. If you drink it at around 7pm, be prepared for 3-6 bowel movements in the early morning. I swear by it now, LOL.
