Allergic To Penicillin 50 Year Ago. Can I Take Amoxicillin ?

Fifty years ago I was only slightly allergic to penicillin with rash on my butt. Currently, I've been sick with a bug going around for a week and a half now. Almost better except my gland hurts when I swallow and swollen and still slight congestion in my chest. I have 500 mg of Amoxil in my home. Is this okay to take this? It is the weekend and can't get to doctors and I do not want to pay the outrageous fee in urgent care. I also have another question. I have bottles of antibiotics that look the same as when I get a prescription that were for my Labrador dog. Are these the same as human drugs? My research says they are.

Hi. I had a small reaction to penicillin when I was a child and I have now got an abscess which is quite large. I don't have a dentist at present and my doctor won't give me any erythromycin and so I don't know what to do. Can I take amoxicillin as I do have some of these? I just want this to go away....or can I buy something over the counter for it? Thanks.
I had an allergic reaction to penicillin when I was a kid. now 25 years later I am having a bad toothache. can I take amoxicillin and be ok
I took only one of the 500 mg amoxil that was for my dog and it did help the swollen gland over night. Thanks for your reply
Hi Sharon,
Sorry to hear about the bug going around. I hope you're feeling more relief from symptoms at this point in time.
To answer your first question, it's actually not recommended that you take Amoxicillin if you have an allergy to Penicillin, since they ARE related.
On the other hand though, it would probably be a good idea to determine whether or not you actually have an infection first and foremost, as that would determine whether you even need an antibiotic at all. From what I understand, taking them when you don't necessarily "need" to can create an environment for antibiotic resistant bacteria.
Concerning your last question about the antibiotics for your dog, my research also leads me to believe that they should be the same types of tablets doctor's prescribe for human use.
I hope this helps! Have you considered trying any essential oils for the symptoms you're having?
