I've been taking Allegra-D for decades and split them all the time. Because Oregon law is stupid, you now have to get a prescription, only two states do this because of methamphetamine makers. I get the 24 hour tablets that are round 240 mg pseudoephedrine hydrochloride. The pills are large and round with a hard time release coating. You have to press pretty hard using a pill splitter, but they do break clean.
In my situation I take them more than half the year during allergy season, first time I take it after a winter break I feel maybe slightly anxious for a few hours and then it goes away and never comes back for the rest of the seasons. Doesn't even upset my stomach.
The only drawback I've experienced is a split pill doesn't always quite last 24 hrs based on severity of the season, so I sometimes end up taking the other half 12 hours later, not all the time though. I never exceed the equivalent of one pill in 24 hrs. I suppose I could just get the 12 hour version and take it twice a day with the same results, but spending more $$.
I have, too. I started crushing them and putting them in yogurt or applesauce. All that's done is hurt my stomach and caused diarrhea. Ugh.
Wow...I had the same issue. What's up with that?? Actually I have found three which means 3vdays worth. This is Allegra- D.
Started taking Allergra D for hearing loss, it actually works really good, but I am finding the tablets are not being digested. Finding whole tablets in the toilet. Sorry to be descriptive. Anyone else have these findings. Are they manufactured in China?
Nothing serious. For a couple of hours felt a little lightheaded but nothing after that. Very relieved!
What were the effects?
Hi,
Thanks for this- I stupidly (without thinking) did just this- cut it in half and took half. Duh- thought after- hmmmm, that was dumb. Any advice on what to do now? Tried to call the 800 number but have "normal" business hours. Figurte I will just drink tons of water and take it easy.
No, it is not safe to cut, break or crush any time released medication, because it may cause you to get too much of the medication at once.
You can learn more Fexofenadine details here and you can learn more Pseudoephedrine details here.
If you are having trouble sleeping, it is most likely due to the Pseudoephedrine that's in Allegra-D, it can cause that and the nervousness in some people.
Thus, you may be better off switching to the regular Allegra that doesn't contain it.
Are there any questions or comments?
by cutting the 12 hr. in half would it lessen the nervousness side effect?
Can you cut an Allegra 12 hour extended release tablet in half? I took one the last 2 mornings and had trouble sleeping both nights.
