Hi I've been on warfarin for 2 months now from blood clots and I'm planning on going out for my birthday , I haven't drank anything since I was diagnosed but I really want to enjoy myself .I know the recommend intake of alcohol is 3 units but I was just wondering if I had any more than that ( say 5 units altogether ) would I be able to lessen the effects of the alcohol thinning my blood by taking some vitamin k the day before, day of and after? Or even taking less mg that day?

Hello, Emma! How are you?

If you've had blood clots, it's really not safe to try to play around like this, it could put your life at risk. It is entirely possible to have a lot of fun for your birthday, without drinking.

However, if your doctor has okayed your imbibing, then you definitely should not exceed the amount they've cleared as being safe for you.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased risk of bleeding and easy bruising.

Is there anything else I can help with?
