Adding Food Coloring To Clear Liquid Morphine

I am a hospice nurse. We administer clear liquid morphine to our patients and teach the family how to administer it. Many are having trouble seeing how much they are pulling up in the syringe. Is is appropriate to add a very tiny minuscule amount of blue food coloring so that the patients can see the liquid and be safe?

I'm not sure if it would be safe, since food colorings aren't made to be used in such a manner. There are some dyes that are, so you may want to look into ordering one of them and using it. You wouldn't need a lot, just enough to add a slight tint to make it easier to see.

This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
