Adderall Xr Side Effects?
UpdatedI was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and took mostly Ritalin. I stopped somewhere around 4th or 5th grade. By the time college rolled around, I knew that my concentration issues were likely due to ADHD, so I got retested at a psychology facility (it was something like 6-7 hours of various tests) and was formally diagnosed with ADHD again at the age of 19. That was 7 years ago. I took amphetamine salts (short-acting) generic for several years with no side effects that I noticed. I stopped for almost two years during pregnancy and breastfeeding because I really didn't want to be taking a stimulant that could potentially affect my unborn child or get into my breast milk. When I finished (which was a couple months ago) I decided to get back onto the medicine. Since my insurance changed, I found out I could get the XR version instead of the short acting and decided to try it. For some reason, my insurance only approved the name brand version, the actual Adderall XR and not the generic. Since I've started taking it, I've been breaking out in hives every single day, starting about 5-7 days into the medication. They appear anywhere, and not usually in the same place 2 days in a row. Sometimes they're on my shoulders and neck, sometimes on my chest and breasts, sometimes on my stomach or legs, something on my arms, I even got them on the palms of my hands once which was incredibly uncomfortable and irritating. I've been taking Benadryl regularly, but it makes me very sleepy and Claritin didn't seem to do anything for the hives. At this point I'm beginning to wonder if there is an inactive ingredient in the name brand version that I am reacting to that was not present in any of the generic brands I previously took. From what I've found via internet searching, the ingredients between the IR and XR versions are identical; it's just a difference in how the medication is distributed that is different. But could that be the issue too? Is there something different about the XR that could be causing hives? I get the exact same reaction when I take penicillin too, and that is the only thing I am aware of that I am allergic to. I have no seasonal, pet, food, or dust allergies. In any case, these hives are driving me crazy. The medicine works really well and I'd really prefer to not have to switch to a different class.

Hello, Aspen90! How are you doing? Has there been any change?
Given the hives, I strongly encourage you to have this checked out by your doctor. As reported by the FDA, if it is an allergic reaction to the medication, it can get worse with repeated exposure, so a switch might be necessary. Allergic reactions could reach the point of being life threatening.
