Adderall Backorder (Page 50)
UpdatedI take generic Adderall 20 mg for narcolepsy and there is not one local pharmacy that has it in stock. I have never had this problem before. The pharmacies are saying that it's on backorder from the manufacturer. Is anyone else having problems getting their scripts filled?
Re: OutOfMedsANdMad (# 963)
Btw… don't get me started on Walmart!!! Thank you!
Re: Bp01 (# 965)
Thanks for the excellent reference on the massive opiod epidemic lawsuit settlement. Glimmer of accountability.
This just happened to me yesterday. Never had this issue before, only the brand-name is available. I’m almost willing to bet this is a manufactured scarcity, since all of the pharmacies seem to have the brand-name in stock, but that’s not covered by insurance. So you can either go without medication, or pay $250. Doing more searching today.
Re: Emily (# 973)
The only problem is that Teva is a very poor quality generic now, and plus, there is no brand name of the instant release Adderall, it’s all generic. I won’t take it again, but, it used to be the best.
Re: Nick (# 983)
All Walgreen's pharmacies in Pensacola, FL are out of generic AND name brand. Was told the supplier is not sure when the backorder will be fulfilled. I was told to contact my physician and have them send to a pharmacy that has it in stock.
Re: Tom (# 984)
That’s not true. There is brand name, that’s what I get every month. My doctor filled out a form with insurance that it’s medically necessary. Most people believe there isn’t a brand name instant release, but there is.
Re: Steph G (# 985)
That’s ok. You can call local pharmacies and try Walgreens if you have them down there. Just call and say that your pharmacy is out and that your doctor needs to know where to resend your script. If they say they don’t have any in stock either, ask them if they can look in their system and tell you the closest pharmacy who has it in stock because you don’t feel comfortable calling around to pharmacies asking them about a controlled substance. They should help you out and they’ll see your pending prescription in the system so they’ll be able to verify you’re a patient
Re: Nick (# 983)
It is covered by insurance if it is medically necessary. You can ask your doctor if they feel it’s medically necessary.
If you have narcolepsy, jt should be medically necessary given the potential danger not only
To yourself but the general public you’re operating a vehicle without medication.
Re: Nick (# 983)
I take brand name and it is fully out of stock in every pharmacy near me. They don't have generic or brand name Adderall and don't know when they will get either in.
Re: Emily (# 988)
If it's prescribed it's medically necessary
Re: Jay (# 991)
Insurance companies have a policy prescriptions must state Medically Necessary for prescriptions to be filled with brand name and covered
FYI I have come across MULTIPLE sources citing the same New York Times article from 2012 that stated the FDA was receiving a massive number of patient complaints daily at the time and it motivated them to investigate with the DEA about what was going on, to the point that the two agencies were in disagreement.
So it DOES make a difference.
As others earlier in the thread have pointed out, there would appear to have been a cut back on the DEA's quota this year. Although it looks that way at first assessment, I'm not entirely sure. In 2019 the DEA listed Amphetamine (for sale) with 47,000,000(g) as the quota for the year. In 2020 they listed D-amphetamine (for sale) with a quota of 21,200,000(g) which seems like a significant reduction but they also have D,L-amphetamine at 21,200,000(g) and it's pretty much the same for 2021 and 2022 also. So I'm not sure if they actually reduced the quota or just broke it down differently for some reason. If anyone knows any more about that?
Whether there has indeed been a reduction or not, I came across something equally panic-inducing in this Bloomberg expose' about these new startup companies taking advantage of the pandemic and essentially running like pill mills. A quote from Melby, the investigative journalist who broke the story, reads,
"In the second quarter of 2021, which is the most recent data we currently have available, the amount of amphetamines prescribed in the U.S., of which Adderall is one, jumped by the highest rate it had since early 2012. Roughly, the equivalent of 9 million maximum-dosage Adderall XR pills, which gives you a sense of the market that is available for companies to prescribe these medications."
It's insane. I suspect this very well may be the main culprit behind the current shortages. The pharmaceutical market is being flooded and overwhelmed with new "ADHD" patients because of these companies.
I'm including links about the startups and also the DEA quotas for anyone who might have more info about how to read those. Multiple years for comparing.

Re: bp01 (# 994)
The DEA relaxed the law requiring at least one face to face meeting between provider and patient before a Schedule II medicine is prescribed when the Public Emergency due to the pandemic went into affect. Due to this, it appears some are taking advantage of prescribing Adderall and other Schedule II medicine for ADHD. I agree those taking these medications have greatly increased due to being able to easily get it over the internet. These sites accept cash. All a person has to do is fill out a form online and talk with a provider by video or phone.
Re: bp01 (# 994)
I have a couple friends who really struggle with crushing fatigue after having covid months ago & if they need stimulants to get through their work day and safely take care of their kid, I hope they can get them.
Re: Emily (# 987)
I live in SW Fl, not one pharmacy in Collier or Lee county have Adderall or generic. I am on Ritalin now and it works but not near as well as Adderall for me. Calling around is always an option but no one has it, I call around every month before my appt. They are playing with peoples lives and it’s rather ridiculous for those of us that really need it to function and be productive instead of seeing a “shiny butterfly” and is off track track for an hour(s). That can can cause one to go from of being gainfully employed straight to gainfully unemployed!
Re: Laroo (# 997)
That's exactly my problem. Specially that on vacation too doesn't help. What can I do?? I feel like total s*** if I don't take it. Pharmacy's wont even tell me if they have it against the law. Help me please I'm in port charlotte
Re: Laroo (# 997)
Most pharmacies will say they do not have it when someone calls that is not a regular customer. They do that to prevent robberies
Re: Lisa (# 979)
