Accutane - Low Dose Regimen
UpdatedHas anyone been on Accutane for a long term low dose regimen? I read that some people have taken only 20-40mg/wk for like 20 years for psoriasis, eczema, and other skin diseases but not for acne. I think I even read someone using ultra low dose regime for oil control. I am considering this treatment. This regimen is more common in Europe from what I read.

What has your doctor advised?
Accutane is very hard to get and use, in the U.S. and there is a very good reason for that.
This medication contains the active ingredient Isotretinoin and it has been shown to be a severe Teratogen, so it can cause severe birth defects to any future children you may have.

There are other side effects it can cause that can also be permanent, such as alopecia and IBS.
From my experience...Accutane destroys not just the glands associated with oil production...It destroys so many of ones bodily functions...I cannot possibly tell you it would be a good trade off..Unless you hope to have little or no stomach function...And also might like to try to digest your food with a digestive tract that is almost lifeless...With no motility...To move the semi digested foods along your rather inflamed digestive tract...Causing you to bleed from your anus.... Rather regularly... But..Of course..It is still your decision..As it was mine..Some 25 plus years ago... Difference being..I had very little warning about what the drug comapny knew was 100 times worse than cigarette smoking..(yes...My humble bleeding opinion). Best of luck.
My plan was to be on Accutane/isotretinoin 20 mgs or .2 mg/kg for a year. Well I made it to 6 months and I had to quit. The side effects continue to increase throughout the course, probably due to the long half life of this medication which leads to the accumulation of it in the body. What began as just a little fatigued when I stated this medication, significantly increased to complete lethargy to where I could hardly get out of bed. Regardless of how much or how good the sleep was, I felt like I could never get enough. I was even taking stimulants with no avail. Joint and muscle pain also increased throughout the course, but I could deal with that. I can't hardly see at all in the dark where others seem to see just fine. Hopefully that subsides. Maybe I'm just sensitive, but I could not imagine taking this forever. As I mentioned, it accumulates in your body and never is completely excreted which is probably why it has supposed long term effects.
I followed your link to the wiki. Yes the medication is tetragenic but NOT mutagenic meaning it damages the eggs or long term fertility. Unless there is some study out there to the contrary. These are two separate properties.
Hi. I don't have severe acne, but I've been on a low dosage of Accutane (20mg per day) for 2 months. I'm weirded out because everyone says you've got to be at least 6 months on the Accutane program. My dermatologist however told me it's time to stop now? Does anyone have the same experience with short term Accutane treatment?
