Accutane Long Term Side Effects (Page 94) (Top voted first)
UpdatedI have a son that took accutane 60 mg a day for six months in a row three years ago. Now after many trips to doctors over strange medical problems, it seems accuatne is the culprit medication that has caused servere joint and muscle pain, severe dry lips, redness in face, eye infections of own immune system attacking itself, systems of osteoarthritis in both shoulders, both wrist and right hand, blood in stool, possible hair loss, abnormal liver function test results in AST and ALT. My son went from being a high school football and track athlete while taking this medication three years ago to someone that is in constant pain just washing a car. After I have researched this drug extensively, I can't believe that the FDA allows this drug originally made for cancer patients to be marketed for teenagers with acne. All one has to do is look online what vitamin A overdose does to someone and then you have the results of what this medication has done to my son. This drug needs to be taken off them market ASAP and the drug companies that make it need to compensate all teenagers that they have possible ruined their future. Shame on them! What is going on here?
Emma, You say you've been on accutane 5 months and have one more month to go. It is Feb 2012. But... the drug was pulled off the market because of its devastating effects. So, please explain how you are obtaining this dangerous drug. You may not have side affects now, but you can't diminish the fact that many patients have had their good health destroyed by this drug.
Many of the people on this forum are just pathetic. There is a high proportion of whingers on here blaming Roaccutane for anything and everything going wrong in their lives.
I went on this drug 3 times for mild-moderate acne in my twenties, I am now 42. The drug is incredible and I want to point out to all of you that it has an incredible anti-ageing effect for women. I'm 42 and look 32 - I put this down to the wrinkle erasing effect of this drug which I took at 22, 24 and 26.
My message to the whingers on this forum is: "Get a life" and stop whinging. There is no problem with the drug people! I would be the first to volunteer to testify in favour of the manufacturer if your ridiculous class action ever got off the ground.
I also want to point out that I am in perfect health and Roaccutane made me pimple free with skin like porcelain for over 14 years.
I never had any adverse effects the 3 times I took it except very mild dry eyes and dry lips while taking it which I managed with Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream.
Even today, at 42 years of age, I get compliments about my skin and I always tell anyone who asks that Roaccutane (which I went on 3 times) is the reason for it. I'd love to say genes but I know it is this drug.
On several occasions if I have seen a person with severe acne at the gym I have gone up to them and introduced myself and told them about Roaccutane. They take one look at my skin and hit the dermatologist quick smart to get on it.
All of you on here whinging would probably have had all these health problems anyway.
To melanie, i doubt u are even in the right frame of mind to be thinking that you are correct on the issue of accutane not having harmful effects on the body. Maybe you are not psychologically sound to even be saying these things coz fact of the matter is, it is proven that Accutane dries up everything in your body. Maybe your brain isnt so sound from the depression and hate you have against the people who are victims of this drug. isotretinoin is a chemo drug. An excess in vitamin A will surely cause some form of acute schizophrenia. Which probably im sure you have a big chance of encountering since you took a lot of accutane. (i hope you dont undergo such a bad ordeal). I'd stop bragging about it to people that you took Accutane. Did you know that you could probably have a chance of having kids with birth defects coz you took accutane? DId you know that out of 400 people that took this poison, 25 commit suicide? You dont sound like a normal person to me.. incompassionate and selfcentered, to be even going near people and telling them about yourself and taking this poison. Im sure most of the people that ingested accutane go thru bad mental wellbeing. It is not their fault. It is the isotretinoin that is the culprit. depression is a killer. imbalanced hormones due to accutane intake could be permanent. excessive vitamin A causes overdose that is permanent. You say you are in your 40s, you must be going thru some crazy hormone imbalance since you could be suffering from menopause? Maybe it is time for you to go see a doctor and tell them about what you did to help yourself. Please only write here if you have something to contribute to help solve the problem. I hope you find some peace.
holly cow you made this up. i am on accutane right now and im fine and you have no idea how ppl with acne feel. even the thought of accutane helps us
I've done two full rounds of accutane and its been years later and I have had no side effects. The only thing i experienced was dry skin while I was on it. There is no reason you should blame the drug or your doctors for your problems seeing as it was your responsibility to research the information. Doctors gave you loads of information about the drug and they told you everything that could possible happen while on the drug or because of the drug. If you or someone you know took the drug, I'm sorry, but it was your responsiblity and no one elses.
I am glad you are doing the colonoscopy for your son you cannot take too many precautions after this drug. I hope everything comes out well. I recommend a probiotic called align it has helped me so much with all the digestive issues after my gallbladder was removed.
There are a lot out there but the secret in align is the best I tried the cheaper ones and hated myself because they did not work. I also love a drug called zofran it is.awesome for the nausea that I have had since taking this drug the two together make life much better for me
After years of ulcers and suffering a hyatel hernia actualey getting some relief is priceless anyway that is my 2cents and good luck to your son in this it is hard on an adult no child should deal with this.
So let me get this straight... You knew your sister had issues with this but you put your kid on the same medicine, wow your a great parent. She took it 20 years ago and still told you a few years later that is absolutely Moronic on your part if you truly think this is so bad. Have you ever thought about the fact that maybe the people that post on here are the only ones who have issues what about the thousands of others that have no side effects. Quit being ignorant, we all know your knowledge is equivalent to a middle school education. Sorry your family has health issues, people do have issues health wise even though they never took accutane. Get real you people are obviously not the healthiest people to begin with an just are looking for something to blame. So obvious so think before you speak next time, sounds like you "poisoned" your child.
To John Torontocanada:
I don't sell my wine. I buy it. Any red wine will cure acne, along with grapes, raisins, grape juice and any grape product. I have studied Homeopathic medicine for over 25 years. You asked me John, what I do for a living. I had to go on disability in 2003 for Parkinson;s that i got at an early age. When diagnosed, i was told that i had it for at least 5 years longer. Then, I remembered my first symptoms in 1992. Most people get Parkinson's in their 70's & 80's. I joined 5 different studies right away to help find a cure. I lucked out and had a nurse tell me to stay away from one drug that caused the horrible tremors that Janet Reno had. I listened and unfortunately, Michael J Fox didn't. I am still independent and plan on keeping that way via Homeopathic medical care which i found the ones that work the best. My neurologist told me that whatever I'm doing, to stick with it because it's working. When i first went on Parkinson's medications, I asked my doctors if I would have to give up my wine, because I refused to. I asked, them "what's it going to do, give me Parkinson's??? " I told them exactly how much wine I drink daily and I'm NOT about to give up what gives me pleasure and is a help to my heart condition. I'm still enjoying my independence and WINE daily for the past 10 years since my diagnosis in 2003. But, IF you count the time when I noticed my first symptoms in 1992, I'm going on 21 years. I told my neurologist to take me off all Parkinson's meds except one, because all the others gave me so many side effects that i would rather deal with the disease than the side effects of all the drugs. I got my quality of life back and have kept my independence and I KNOW that God gave mankind the knowledgement to find natural cures. I DO NOT sell anything to make money. I just spread the TRUTH for those seeking relief of illness. The wine I drink has NO sugar which will make acne worse. As teenagers, STAY away from SUGAR & CHOCOLATE!!!
I hope I have answered your questions John. I thank you for being honest, I was too.
Jim
Guys I'm feeling good so I don't really feel like debating anymore. haha. I can tell you though just say no to drugs. Sugar is fermentable and is bad. I've been learning or healing from the best natural doctor in the business. Stop sugar stop cancer. stop sugar stop ulcerative colitis. It's all about bacterial exchange, but don't kill to much or the histamines will ravage you like wildebeest. Anyways, I think my suffering is almost over. Grape cure for acne... that's kind of like the miracle juice diet. Real science not the fake pharmaceutical science that says diet doesn't mean anything dictates that sugar causes fermentation and food for bacteria. If you have acne which as we all know is caused by hormones and poor eating habits not "genetics" as the wacko jacko doctors say then just eating alkaline foods should help. Zinc is another legitimate treatment. I would say just topical herbs would be good as well as trying to create a more alkaline system. Not sure of this science behind grapes. I mean yeah resveratrol is a antioxidant, but not sure that would target and kill bacteria survival in an acidic condition. The crazy thing is that teenagers have out of wack hormones due to the milk and meats laced with hormones. Ah man to go back and not have any antibiotics, hormones, or immunizations. It would be a dream world with low crime and happiness everywhere. The birds would chirp and the trees would dance. Our wonderful politicians leaving their mark on generations by allowing poisons to destroy our society. It makes for a wonderful elitist industry, but for angry neurotic and short tempered idiot buffoons. Well I've done my nightly rant. Stay away from lead, fluoride, bpa, arsenic, mercury, hormones, gmo's, and antibiotics. Remember you can crush the industry by avoiding this stuff. Now they will force you to have insurance before they crumble from no customers. Rant over!
To johntorontocanada;
John, I don't laugh at anyone who has a health problem. They can laugh at me all they and you want and claim that my 25 years of studying Homeopathic medicine is a joke, like what you just accused me of. The wine i drink has kept my heart in good shape and my cardiologist said the pictures of my last nuclear stress test look great and no reason to put stents in my heart arteries.
You "skimmed" through my last remarks. Most fat people in Europe are half the size of morbidly obese Americans who need to purchase 2 airline tickets to fit in an airplane, not to mention all the extensions for the seat belt. The Mediterranean diet with olive oil keeps their hearts more healthy. You SHOULD know by now that Europeans drink plenty of red wine. Italians, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Greek and any nation that is NOT Islamic. That's where you will find healthy FAT people. What do you mean, "some fat American kid's diets are bad?" ALL of them are!!! Hereditary my ASS!!! I bet you ate your share of chocolate and greasy fried food and don't have a clue that it caused your acne. I DO NOT sit and laugh at people who are suffering. I give them advice that can help them and STOP their suffering and it's not my fault you ended up with acne and tried Accutane before being harmed with acne, and EVEN IF you would have read my prevention directions, you would have picked Accutane before trying what i have been trying to tell you about. I can NOT take the blame for stupidity when God given help is turned away by someone who KNOWS IT ALL!!! EVERY single person who i have met with acne, I have told them the same thing I have posted here, and their acne has disappeared, and they DID NOT try harmful products like Accutane. I DO NOT take credit for their healing. They can thank God, NOT ME!!!!
My advice to the young generation is: Stay OUT of fast food restaurants!!!! Give UP Soda's and drink only pure fruit juice. Stay away from chocolate until you are in your mid-twenties. DO NOT listen to johntorontocanada, unless of course you want acne and obesity.
Forgot to mention stay positive. Positivity will reduce acids. If he's in constant pain he needs to try to get his mind busy away from the pain. It's very tough at first. I have also found dgl, chamomile, and lobelia calming for the intestine. Fixing the biology is priority 1, but as it gets fixed try to falsify the happiness to aid the biological recovery. Natural doctors have proven methods that will help specifically target the problem. It is most likely he has too much yeast now. Let the immune system work by healing with food. Vegetable juice is very healing... No fruit
To Diane:
Please listen to JRAD!!! He knows what he's talking about. ANY liver cleansing capsules will work to detox the harmful crap from the body. I tried to tell John from Toronto how dangerous refined sugar is and wheat and I was going to add gluten, but forgot. Follow the rest of my instructions about natural sugars and stay away from ALL refined sugars. Get your son to a natural (Homeopathic) doctor. Probiotics say on the label to take once daily. My cardiologist told me it's safe to take them 3 times daily cause he also has digestive problems. You can also try digestive enzyme capsules. They are homeopathic and he can't overdose on them.
JRAD said to stay away from fruit, but i disagree. Applesauce or banana's will stop the intestinal discomfort, especially diarrhea . The potassium in bananas will replace the lost potassium if a patient has diarrhea. Both bananas & applesauce , the (unsweetened) will have natural sugars which the body tolerates. KEEP refined sugar out of the diet.
you are do NOT take it. I am a scientist It also causes certain types of cancer.
Hello. I understand. Interesting your post because my hands and feet are smaller then my dad (I am taller then my dad) and smaller then my brother. This means I should have grown more. I took accutane when I just turning 17. During chemistry (sophomore year) I know my hands were fairly large (relative to the other kids in the class). Now they are not. Something stopped my growth at the beginning of my senior year. I should be 5 9 and am 5 7 (thanks to accutane). But there are other problems.
Hey Anthony,
yes I do plan to continue using this supplement in the long run simply because of what it is doing for me. I liked it so much I ended up becoming a distributor for them.
Getting the ingredients separately wouldn't have the same effect because of the way it is combined in the one pill, plus it is easier to take just one pill instead of 5 or 6 different ones. You could actually be what is called a preferred customer which is what I was doing when I first tried it and it is $40 plus tax and shipping which is roughly 49 to 50 a month. I know it is a bit pricey but for me it was worth it. It made me feel just so much better overall and I have hear many stories how it is doing the same for so many other people too.
I don't think no one has ever really correlated it with accutane side effects.
I saw how people treated with chemo were given Protandim and it showed to help them re cooperate with their treatment. I know people are saying how accutane is a chemo drug, so that may be the reason I am feeling better taking Protandim.
And as for the dry eyes, I don't think it is really doing anything for that, but went to the eye doctor recently and was told how my oil glands in my eyes were really dry which caused me to have a couple little yellow dots in my eyelid. He prescribed me some prescription eye drops called azasite, which seem to be helping a bit.
Hey Anthony,
I took a look through the scam articles and find them interesting. Maybe it is and maybe it isn't but from my personal experience taking this product I find Protandim is working fro me like I said. And yes I think if you are already spending all kinds of money on other supplements, you should just try protandim since in my opinion its an all in 1. I personally decided to go the more natural way now after taking accutane and the only time I will take another drug is if I am sick and need antibiotics or whatever, but other than that I feel leary about taking prescription drugs again.
And anthony and anyone else who read my previous post about Protandim, you could get it from
{edited for policy reasons}
And to get the preferred customer discount that I mentioned in my previous post you just go to the top left where it says join and you would choose the preferred customer option then just fill it out from there.
But like I said it is an antiaging supplement and works by reducing free radicals in the body which is linked to over 200 diseases. It has started working for me and it definitely wont hurt to try it out. I started feeling better after about a month or 2 of taking it. It could vary for other people though.
I hope it works for you and anyone else like it is for me and would like to hear from you and anyone else who decides to give it a try so yall could keep me updated if it is making you guys feel better.
Thanks
Hey justin
yea I think protandim would work for you like it has truly helped me with my negative accutane side effects. Also I like how it gives me more energy, naturally. And yea I hope it works out for you.
thank you for your advice, i was on roaccutane 20 mg for 2 weeks but yesterday i stopped it because of its dangerous side effects, but im afraid that these two weeks on accutane would make me suffer!..
First of all, your doctor should have given you all the information along with the side effects of the medication. By law, you must Pledge to follow as directed and have monthly lab work and visits with the doctor, especially to discuss any side effects. I don't know what kind of doctor you took your son to that would prescribe 60 mg. for the full 6 months of treatment. I used Accutane 15 years ago and am using it again for a different problem and neither time has my doctor given me the max amount to start out with and use the full treatment. So you putting your message out into cyber space just shows that you have no idea what you're talking about. You should have read all the information on this drug before having your son use it.
