Accutane Long Term Side Effects (Page 19)
UpdatedI have a son that took accutane 60 mg a day for six months in a row three years ago. Now after many trips to doctors over strange medical problems, it seems accuatne is the culprit medication that has caused servere joint and muscle pain, severe dry lips, redness in face, eye infections of own immune system attacking itself, systems of osteoarthritis in both shoulders, both wrist and right hand, blood in stool, possible hair loss, abnormal liver function test results in AST and ALT. My son went from being a high school football and track athlete while taking this medication three years ago to someone that is in constant pain just washing a car. After I have researched this drug extensively, I can't believe that the FDA allows this drug originally made for cancer patients to be marketed for teenagers with acne. All one has to do is look online what vitamin A overdose does to someone and then you have the results of what this medication has done to my son. This drug needs to be taken off them market ASAP and the drug companies that make it need to compensate all teenagers that they have possible ruined their future. Shame on them! What is going on here?
Look at the grains in your diet, eating alot of wheat products causes alot of problems
To the person that said their doctor said that accutane did not cause their problems: After I found out I had diverticulitis, IBS, Proctitis, and colitis I asked him if it could be due to Accutane usage. He just kind of laughed and said no that is an acne drug. Do doctors not understand there is a relation?
Good question! I have been laughed at with many or ignored by others or the worst they get upset over me thinking this. Cover-up? When I went to get my records from my doctor that prescribe Accutane he destroyed them. Of course this is common practice for many doctors I think they are suppose to keep them for 7 years by law. All that they had was my folder. This was the time all the lawsuits were coming out about it. I do believe they were told to destroy records or they did so they wouldn't be sued. People will sue everyone involved. Good luck though getting a doctor to ever admit this. My paperwork for the lawyer on a possible Accutane lawsuit ask what doctor said your symptoms were related to Accutane. I said NO DOCTOR. OR you kidding me! That is a joke and if someone's doctor ever says that get it in writing that is all you have in the end when it comes to maybe proving any of this.
for Jan2, please google "leaky gut syndrome" also do a search on Amazon for the same item, you will find alot of answers I have finally found mine after 7 yrs. of searching. If it was my child I would not have all those tests done, the doc will not know what to do no matter what is found.
For some reason my reply to Jan posted her name v/s mine. Anyway, Happy New Year to everyone! Hoping 2011 is better.
Thank You And Happy New Year To You And Everyone Else Here.
are you working for the drug companies? why would you blantantly discount others opinions. yes you are correct your not a doctor so keep your oppinion to yourself. people dont just randomly loose hair in thier early twenties and people dont start having digestive problems out of the blue. its obviously directly connected to accutane. for god sakes its a brain cancer drug that also happens to kill off acne well if it "happens" to do that what else do you think it "happens" to do. Well how about deformed or miscarraged babies, your insensative go back to your cush job at big pharma and promote some other poison. just remmember people god gave us everything we need in the form of natural plants to fix whatever ailments you may have. Humans have done nothing but created methods of profit and they dont care about your well being or best intrests just thier bottom line. sry bout bad spelin it be late
your the hate monger this stuff ruins lives. im guessing you also support drinking and driving, as well as crack/meth use for pregnant women
I've also taken accutane at the age of 16. That was definitely the worst medication I've ever taken in my life. Now at the age of 21, eating a healthy diet and exercising daily I personally haven't experienced any long term side effects of this drug. It certainly effects everyone differently, but I do agree with most here in saying that it should be taken off the market. I mean one of the side effects on there is Death! I don't know what I was thinking when I did take it for 6 months. I guess to me, the acne was so bad that I was willing to take that absurd risk to have better skin. Most doctors with good ethics will let you know ahead of time the great risks involved with making the decision to take it or not, before they even give you the side effect booklet. If I was 16 again in that position with the knowledge I have now, I would not have taken it. For anyone considering acne alternatives, just stick to eating a 75% diet of raw fruits and vegetables for 6 months and see how that effects your body from the inside-out instead! You'd be surprised that most of the bad acne causing bacteria (bad bacteria in general) contributes to bad looking skin from all the acidic food Americans consume. Many diseases/illness didn't even exist till we started consuming all the processed garbage on the market today. Food for thought; don't just take my word for it, but try for yourself a change in healthy eating habits for a long period of time and see how that works before trying something as detrimental as accutane.
Hi everyone, I just wanted to update you all on my experience just incase anyone else has experienced the same. So i stopped taking accutane after 3 months when i first discovered this board.... and started to read about the side effects long term. I had to go back to my dermatologist and i explained everything i had read online and all he long term side effects. he denied it all, he said there are no long term side effects, he said he hadnt heard of all the successful law suits about IBS against roche in the USA (IBS is not even written as a side effect on the info i was given!). Whilst telling him all the current side effects i had (eye twitching, back pain, dry skin, loss of hair, headaches, etc) he continued to write my next prescription and told me just to get an eye test done. I asked him what exactly accutane does to the body to get rid of acne, he said 'we dont know exactly it just removes a lot of the oil'. As I told him the symptoms i'd read about i was practically crying= he just kept denying it and then asked me if i was having any 'mental' issues. I was surprised he couldnt understand why i'd be upset by the possibility of what my future may now hold. He also suggested 3 times in this 10minute 'chat' that i should see a psychiatrist. It was the most scary thing ever.... he just wanted to palm me off onto someone else. I dont think he was even listening to me. Furthermore he contacted my GP to suggest again seeing a psychiatrist. Its scary when you hear a doctor suggest such a thing. I actually walked out doubting myself. I took print-outs of what i'd read to my GP, who was more understanding. But why dont these doctors know anything about a drug they prescribe to people day in-day out?? even if they dont believe it- they should know about every angle and offer complete advice, not just the one side. I left my dermatologists feeling very vulnerable and scared about what was going to happen next. Which I was right about- but luckily my GP agreed with me I didnt need to see a psychiatrist. Has anyone else found their derms unwilling to listen, etc?? Melissa xx
@MLS
YES, It's happen to me! Many doctors including dermatologists have acted this way with me. But don't forget you know yourself best. They all say see a psychiatrist, and it's not a psychiatrist you need it's a good doctor that listens and believes in YOU and will speak the truth. I have had a couple since say OH YES and know about Accutane, they are out there keep searching. There are some doctors out there that know the truth, but will not admit to it, for many reasons. Like I say get copies of all your records so it proves you were on Accutane that will help you in the long run. Get copies from the pharmacies. Always keep your records, I learn this the HARD WAY!
I am going to try the clay that I mentioned in an earlier blog on here. In fact, off to order it now before I forget again. Another problem memory loss. Oh and coconut oil has been known to be good for a 101 things, check it out on the internet there is good and bad I have read, but all my friends are on it and looking good (younger). Some people are allergic to it. We can heal our skin naturally we don't need drugs like Accutane. Best wishes, and keep us posted on here. :)
I took Acutane 80mg a day in the 1980's for over a year.
I am ill, please help me.
Dear Sharon,
I am the one who started this post. I am sorry you are not feeling well. How can we help you out ? Please let us know. Looking forward hearing back from you soon.
From the Heart,
Scott
Dear Melissa,
I understand your frustration dealing with dermatoligist that hand out Accutane and its generics ( by the way Accutane shoud not be prescribed to anyone since about July of lst year cause Roche pulled it off the shelfs in U.S). Accutane generic brands are still on the market though. After taking my son to 8 speacialist, I drove him to Cleveland Clinic and promised him: This time we will find a doctor that can explain what is going on in your body and be able to help you with our pain and stomach problems etc, Only to be told on the phone 6 weeks prior by Clevelend Clinic " we only have one doctor that helps patients with the causation of Accutane". Only to be told this doctor did not know of any long term side effects other than depression and asked my son if he wanted any scripts for his complexion. Dr. said" I am a dermatoligist, have no idea why they sent you to me, I write scripts for Accutane, I am not sure why you are here". This was't the first time this has happened either. I feel you pain. Dermatoligist are either totally ignorant and only believe what their Medical Journals , The FDA and what big Pharma tells them while they buy them lunch for his whole office eveyrday. Its sad. Everyday more and more light and truth of what these drugs have done to people since 1982. So many suffered so many differnt side effects and they or their parents never knew it was a chemotherapy drug prescribed to their kids to clear acne while giving the same drug with the same name to a cancer patient in a hospital. If we fed someone poison eeveryday for six months, we would be in jail. Don't give up. Its seems more doctors and lawyers anr more willing to speak the truth a little more recentley. Keep going to doctors and tell them your symptoms. Best Wishes,
Scott
I am a 4th year medical student. In my end year I insisted on taking roaccutane, even though I had reasonable looking skin, I took it for 4 months, 20mg in the 1st 2 months and 40mg the next 2 months.. I had suffered paranoid like behaviour, weakening of vision, I wear thick glasses n I can hardly study, loss of concentration, severe bleeding stomach ulcers, bone pain in ervery single bone, spinal fractures, osteoarthiritis, muscle weakness and u name it.. I am not concerned about any law suite etc, I have no time 4 that.. I am halfway 2 becoming a doctor and I'm concerned how to reverse all this crap that has happened 2 me.. I'm only 20 and I need a solution!!!!
In my late teens I had severe cystic acne. I took 2 full cycles of the strongest dosage, it cleared up a little bit. Now at 24 it is worse than its ever been and they want to put me back on it for a third time..not sure what to do. I take doxycycline now, but it doesn't really do much. Any suggestions? I really don't want to take Accutane again.
Daniel,
I can't make any promises but this site is worth checking out.

My son went on a Candida diet for 3 months 5 years after taking Amnesteem ( Accutane ). It is not a cure all for Accutane patients, but does clean out your system. My son still suffers daily from long term side effects for Amnesteem but found out this diet helped him with his brain fog and also gave him more energy. Anyone that takes antibiotics for a extented period of time can develope a east infection. There are also other sites you can look at by googling " Candida diet". My son took treelac for 3 months and still takes a pro-biotic daily.
Good Luck !
Scott
I've been getting lots of emails recently concerning the Accutane lawsuit. Has anyone had kidney problems as a result of taking this drug? After taking Accutane in 1997 I developed a cancerous tumor on a kidney which required the kidney to be removed. I don’t believe in that type of coincidence. Thanks for any information.
@ Jim,
I've also been receiving a lot of those accutane lawsuit emails in my junk box. Personally being a full-time student, I don't have the time to deal with something of this nature. You're definitely not alone on this ordeal. Maybe there's someone else on this message board who has taken it to the legal level in court? Has anyone here gone about doing so? If so, I think many of us would be interested to know the outcome.
:( Yes problems with my kidney's too. I got a call asking if I was on Accutane and I said yes and the lady hooked me up with a lawyer and I filled out he paperwork and I am waiting to see what happens. Let them do the work, some money is better then no money and believe me my husband and I have been forking out the money since we meet in the late 80's over my health problems due to Accutane. I will believe it when I see it though is my outlook with this all.
