Accutane Is A Wonder

Updated

Reading through this page I am very sorry to hear the issues that many of you have experienced from accutane. My experience with accutane has been very different.
I first started getting acne when I was 13 (I'm 21 now). It started moderately on my forehead. I wasn't too concerned at first and tried some face wash and other topical meds from the drug store.

As I got into high school it got much worse and I visited a dermatologist. She prescribed Differin and that was successful at least at keeping it from getting completely out of control, but it certainly didn't cure it. In college I was under a lot of stress and was having some hormonal imbalances and my acne got much worse. I tried so many different products and it finally got to the point where I would pretty much try any product that offered a money back guarantee because I knew that it would almost certainly not work, and I wasn't out anything for trying. My acne was very traumatic for me. I remember looking in the mirror and seeing the acne cysts all over my face, particularly my jawline, and envisioning the deep scars I would always have because of it.

It was just really too much for me to handle and I decided to visit a dermatologist again. He recommended accutane. I had pretty much only heard horror stories about it and I closed off at the suggestion of going the medication. I had heard that a woman must be on two forms of birth control to take accutane, and I was not comfortable with doing that. It turns out that although they're a little begrudging about it, they will let you take it if you promise to be abstinent.

Deciding to go on accutane was a huge decision for me. I researched a lot online and found either testimonials saying it was a miracle drug or that it was very dangerous and damaging. I felt that maybe I was being selfish by going on it, putting my appearance before my health. Really it came down to the fact that I knew I needed to try this to be able to get on with life. My self esteem was very, very low and it seemed that whatever the risks, I couldn't really function this way anymore.

I started accutane last February. It was somewhat of a hassle go in for monthly pregnancy tests (especially when I was 100% sure I wasn't pregnant), fill out ipledge questions online, and have bimonthly doctors appointments. Also, it is very costly- my insurance didn't cover it, and it was nearly $300/month. The only side effects I encountered were very dry lips and very chapped hands. I ended my treatment in November and those side effects have entirely subsided. My face had lots of redness when I was on the medication and for about a month afterwards, but that has now almost entirely subsided. Perhaps there will be other side effects in the future, I have no idea.

This medication is a miracle. My face and body acne are 100% cleared. I have no scars, even from the deepest acne on my chin. I never would have envisioned as a high school or college student that one day I wouldn't have acne anymore. I really can't say enough about how effective this medication has been for me. I know everyone has very different experiences with effectiveness and side effects, but going on acutane was one of the best things that has happened to me. If you're thinking about going on accutane research it and come up with a decision you feel comfortable.
