About To Wean Off Nuvigil

Updated

I'll try to be detailed but I just started weaning off Nuvigil so I am very unclear. I became very dependent on this medication and I just need to face the fact that there is no other option. I'm very scared of withdrawing so I thought I would post.

Hi Tracy,

Sorry to hear about your situation. Have you considered talking with your doctor about setting up some sort of tapering schedule that you can adhere to in order to come off safely? I only mention this because, given your description, that's probably what I would do first and foremost if it were me in such a predicament.

Feedback in other related threads here have discussed how the withdrawal effects of Nuvigil typically involved symptoms similar to a rebound crash, causing profound tiredness, an inability to concentrate, depression and other effects of that nature.

The thread linked below (post #4 in particular) is also filled with some insight that may be helpful when it comes to overcoming Nuvigil withdrawal symptoms:

Hope this helps!

Thank you for the response. I'll be weaning off for about a week. I know that's not very long but my insurance gives me such a rough time with this medication and I don't want to deal with it. I know there aren't many posts about this, but I believe Nuvigil is very addictive.

I am preparing myself for the withdrawal. I'll be staying with my dad who will take care of myself and daughter while I get through this. I know it will be difficult so I won't allow myself to be alone. I also juice a lot, will triple up on my fish oil, and have researched supplements that will support my body through the process.

Considering at all the turmoil and inconvenience I have to go through to get off a prescribed medication I have only taken for two months, it opens my eyes to how very sad it is that so many if us are stuck on medications. Not to mention the fear I feel about the withdrawal. I feel many of us were once labeled with an illness and that stigma sticks with us forever unless getting the courage to take a different route.

I don't know if I will be successful, but I will try and hopefully live a life free of this bondage. In sick if being a slave to pills

I agree with your philosophy in many ways about patients being labeled with a conditional stigma that sticks with them unless they make the necessary changes within themselves to take a different route. I also think it's great that you're juicing a lot. I personally find juicing to be very healing, cleansing and energizing. My guess is that all the support and tools you give your body will eventually pay off when it comes down to overcoming possible withdrawal symptoms and ensuring long term well-being.

Keep the faith and stay strong mentally! Sometimes our minds wander to the point where we can get discouraged, but if you remain on point with your nutritional supplement regimen and juicing, you're putting yourself on a good path in my honest opinion.

~Wishing you good health always!

I ended up just stopping the Nuvigil cold turkey 6 days ago and what a relief. I'm tired but not half as bad as I thought I would be. For anyone who wants to get off this dangerous and addictive medication that feels trapped, just want you to know that you will be ok.

My Dr.s office just told me they didn't get the pre-auth request from 11/2 so since it was a holiday weekend they would need at least a week once the office reopens on 11/15. This means I will be off Nuvigil again for 3 weeks if not longer. Is this safe for my body to be forced into this? Ins co needs 5 min phone call to authorize. What can o do?

Re: Tracyreya (# 2) Expand Referenced Message

I was prescribed this medicine for cognitive exhaustion for post-concussion syndrome. I quit after two months because it caused thought-loops and severe ADD.

Five days after quitting I developed TMJ and fibromyalgia symptoms. Three weeks out they were totally disabling and medically dangerous. I am now back on Armodafinil to control symptoms. Now I am mentally and physically disabled. My doctor told me there was very low addiction risk, and I asked him several questions. Then I find that the prescribing information he could see predicted exactly these symptoms. He tells me that with drawl should only last three days and this is my problem.
