Amoxicillin is an antibiotic that is used to treat or prevent bacterial infections, so it will not do anything to treat a cough. The only way it may help is if it and the mucous are due to some type of respiratory infection.
The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
