Even though both Xanax and Clorazepate are classified as benzodiazepines, my take on this is that no two drugs are created equally; whereas not only the half-life varies, but also the duration of effect, the potency and the binders/fillers that affect bioavailability. Therefore the only way to determine if you're benefiting from or the other on a similar level would be through trial and error. I don't encourage anyone to just start experimenting on their own, but perhaps your friend's doctor can make some suggestions that may alleviate potential withdrawal symptoms without having to do this type of guess work...
I hope they are doing well and continue to make progress at their own pace.
