40mg In The Morning And Still Depressed Up Until Lunch Time
UpdatedHi I am wondering if others who are on the maximum dosage of 40mg still experience on-going depression for a few hours afterwards. I take my meds in the morning but it takes several hours for me to feel ok. I have small fibre neuropathy of the autonomic nervous system and have been on citalopram for 3 1/2 years. Recently I ave put on weight. I haven't always felt this on-going depression. It seems to be getting worse. Has anyone had ths experience when after a reasonable time on the drug it seems not to be working as effectively?

Hi Chris,
The reason why the medication seems to be not working as effectively over time, is generally due to the tolerance or physical addiction of the drug itself. As for Citalopram, it's not addictive, but you can build up a physical tolerance - meaning your brain gets used to the chemical changes the meds cause, and you eventually need to keep taking more to get the same effects.
For a case like yours, having taken the maximum dose available, I would suggest considering an alternative treatment or therapy that can help supplement the effects of Citalopram or trying something completely different altogether so that your happiness isn't reliant on that medication.
When it comes to severe depression, I find it is very essential that the underlying causes of your depression be treated for you to feel true relief without the use of medication. I too suffered from severe depression (for a little over 2 years). Only recently have I been able to overcome the struggle of dealing with it on a daily basis and getting by without faking a smile.
Changing my environment and diet has helped me to change my state of being and how I decided to look at things; which directly affected my mood and everyday sense of well-being. I know what works for me may not work for everyone dealing with depression, but ultimately, medications just cover up the feelings temporarily, and doing something about how you feel is in my opinion the best way to get long term relief from depression.
I hope this helps!
