20mg Adderall Xr - New Patient! (Top voted first)

I was prescribed Ritalin as a kid, then graduated to Adderall until I was 18. After that, my parents moved out-of-state, and I was no longer insured, so I decided to try and show everyone I didn't need medication to be 'normal'. I could never tell that the medication did anything for me, but my parents always seemed to notice a positive difference.

I'm now almost 31, married, and doing pretty well, but I still struggle with focus (studying) and finishing tasks / forgetfulness, so I saw my doctor who prescribed me 20mg of Adderall XR a day.

I took my first dose this morning, and had a homemade fruit smoothie with it... but within the first 30min or so I started to feel really antsy, super chatty, felt like I was about to bounce out of my skin, and experienced dry mouth, and skin tingles. I can handle dry mouth, but I really really really didn't like the rush. My husband suggested I run on the elliptical - which I did - and it actually helped me feel a little less crazy... however, I don't like it. Most people are posting that they don't feel any effects, and want to know how long until they happen...

I'd love to know how long until I get used to the medication and feel NORMAL, but more functional? I was so crazy today, I feel like I did LESS and had to pacify myself to calm down and feel closer to normal. My Mom is a retired RN, and she said to give it a couple days, but I'm worried these side effects wont change. I know for a fact I wont be able to survive at work in the same condition I was in today...!

Are my side effects normal for a first dose, or is this pretty adverse and a red flag?

Adderall is a stimulant, so it can cause side effects like that, as listed by the FDA, along with nausea, headache, weight loss and insomnia. It may take about a month, before your body gets used to the medication and things settle back down.

However, if it's the problematic and may interfere with your work, you should speak to your doctor. You may need to start with a lower dose, or to try a different medication.

Thank you for getting back to me! I finally heard back from my doctor who will start me on a lower dose of 10mg the next time I see her (next week).

I'm starting to feel a bit more normal, but still pretty stimulated - thought mostly functional! Whew!

I have the same and I'm 54 and live in NYC. What brand are you on? I'm on Teva. Are you supposed to take this several times a day? I am now up to taking 20mg and it seems to last longer---the 10mg was just not enough and I had to keep taking it and was starving---I actually was gaining weight. Did your dr go over any blood pressure issues on Adderall?
