2016 Cdc Guidelines For Prescribing Opioids For Chronic Pain (Page 8) (Top voted first)
UpdatedHey all fellow patients out there, did you know the CDC has published a list of their proposed 2016 guidelines for doctors who prescribe opioids for chronic pain? That includes oxycodone, lortab, percocet, hydrocodone, opana, suboxone, morphine, and any other drug that has an opiate ingredient in it that so many of us count on to lead normal lives!
This affects all of us and the comment period ends on January 13 2016! That's about a week from now! You know the doctors are going to have to follow whatever federal rules pass so if you are worried that you might not get the care you need please go to the gov web site for the office of the Federal Register and submit your comments to them before it's too late!
"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announces the opening of a docket to obtain public comment on the draft CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain (Guideline). The Guideline provides recommendations regarding initiation or continuation of opioids for chronic pain; opioid selection, dosage, duration, follow-up, and discontinuation; and assessment of risk and addressing harms of opioid use. The Guideline is intended to be used by primary care providers (e.g., family physicians or internists) who are treating patients with chronic pain (i.e., pain lasting longer than 3 months or past the time of normal tissue healing) in outpatient settings."

Editor's note: Please note that the above statement "You know the doctors are going to have to follow whatever federal rules pass" is technically correct but may be misleading in this case because the CDC draft says that it is "not a federal regulation" and that "adherence to the Guideline will be voluntary."
Editor's note # 2: The title for this discussion thread has been updated to reflect the topic most effectively.
There is a link right above your post with the guidelines. Look for the post by Roy, click on the link
Cynthia,
Medicaid is different in every state. Here is the issue. Years ago when I did my 10,000 suicide pain level patients Ohio changed formulary. First they cut out Duragesic for Medicaid patients, then Oxycontin.
On Medicaid in every state there are exceptions. If so then people on that drug must arrange a new drug or ask their physician to file for the exception and while waiting go on something else, not just die.
Jenny, they need proof that the allergic reaction is life threatening and that is the only way to prove it. It is common for a patient to say that they are allergic to a med if the won't want to take it.
Not everything kills you instantly. If not super allergic but slightly it builds up in system atleast in mine.
P450 , I was referring to the rules that Tennessee Medicaid has regarding not being prescribed the two preferred extended release Morphine drugs and being able to get another drug.
Robert Rape, the drug addictions and abuse problems were bad before President Obama was elected and it has gotten worse in the last 8 years. There are a lot of things that go on that the President has nothing to do with. By the way, if you think that the tighter restrictions are due to President Obama alone, you haven't been paying attention to the people that are hoping to be elected President in 2016.
Robert Raper, you will have to get your dr to write another prescription, unless the pharmacist wants to call your dr and explain the situation and see if your dr will do a verbal prescription.
I need a dr. in charleston west virginia, as my dr. was scrutinized by the FDA for nurse assistant who forged a prescription on him and another dr. in the same practice. Now he is discontinuing opiates for all his patients. I have been treated by him since 2002 -never once failed a U/A but he is cutting me off because he does not want to lose his practice. I had a motorcycle wreck in 1995, had 2 surgeries and pain is unbearable and back has scar tissue and full of arthritis. Help me please!
elton, you need to call you insurance company and ask what pain management drs in your area take your insurance. Or just start caling pain managment drs. Have you asked your dr for a referal ? You will need a copy of your medical records from your current dr.
Each dr has their own way of doing things. It is doubtful that you will be prescribed what you're currently taking until the new dr has seen you at least a few times. Then the new dr may or may not prescribe you the same thing that your current dr did.
#65. I don't know what pharmacy you use however if you use the generic version fentanyl it is way cheaper. $2000 sounds awfully ridiculous
#65 there is no way I'd be able to afford 2k a month. I am on fentanyl myself and its $187 per month without insurance here in Oklahoma
C Lilly, u r one of the reason that the cdc n others think that the people like myself that truly r in pain has to suffer. No one wants to be on meds n no one wants to hurt. The med only takes away 60 percentage of the pain if that. So plz stop u All have done enough damage! Thanks.
I was on 3 20 MG oxymorphone for 7 Years due to fact they only last 8 hours then changed to 2 30 MG oxymorphone cause nurse was going by strict 12 hour when they had to change my doctor and 4 10 MG percocet when I lost my job same doctor took away oxymorphone completely and put me on morphine that kills me and took away 1 percocet. Saying they know I need amount I have taken for years without having to increase because it worked but tenncare says 120 max no matter what.. being in Tennessee as well our rules/restrictions should be same.

I did not have a lot of Education But My Daughter And Her Morher Do both have Degres and GOOD JOBS when I worked I put in 90 Hr weeks to get there books I like to make something from a pice of metal I ALLWAYS had a Blue Collar that never bothered me thank you BL you seem like a Real Nice Person Stay Strong And THRIVE.
BL you have misunderstood, my wife has a good job we have the crummy insurance that her job gives. I had 2 procedures at Laser Spine in Tampa Fla in Dec. This was my 4th back 2nd neck procedure. I was in pain 24/7. I now have a level of 2 as long as I don't lift anything over 25 lbs that's hard to me. Yesterday and so far today I have took no opiates just ibuprofen for the first time in 20 yrs. I kept working in a machine shop till 2000, that's when my neck gave out. I left the shop went to the hospital and they operated that night. I worked a shift from 3:30 to 8:00. I liked it that way, all I needed was the prints for my parts. I do miss that it's a big piece of this man. I wish I could work but I'm no count for that anymore, if I get to ride one of my motorcycles, I have 4. I can't go far but I can ride a couple miles. That is what I like to do. I've been told I shouldn't but I am as long as the GOOD LORD GOD lets me breathe. The insurance that my wife gives me paid 100,000.00 for the back. They tried to say the neck was not a medical necessity but they have relented as Laser Spine made them aware it was who would have any surgery for fun? The insurance co and I have had some nice talks but the credit for anything good comes from the young Lady who does the benefits. She tried to get my last prescription but the Dr wrote it wrong for the first time ever and yes I get my disability. I worked all my life even when I rode with my Friends. I worked If a mandatory run came up if the place I worked would not give me time off I went anyway. I could always find a job. I was a Good Machinist. I learned young. I needed parts for a Motorcycle I was bringing back to life.
Robert, now this question is not for myself. I only wish, however my husband back pain is severe and I myself have always been reluctant about back surgery. Having known so many throughout my life once done having to go back multiple times and did not hear anyone of them say it helped. However the laser spine is sparking my interest. I personally don't know anyone that used it as of yet. From what you posted it sounds promising. Would you recommend? Anyone else have opinions or know someone have feedback? Would be a life changer for him atleast if something is out there that does not put him in hospitals over and over again.

Okcgrl I have 3 disk in my neck from old fusion and it still hurts but I don't hurt as bad and the bone where my nerves came out at the bottom were to tight I wish you well.
I am so sorry this happened to you! It's like Dr Robert Cochran ( a former pain doc and author of The Opiate Cure) said. "Us doctors are the ones causing patients to behave like addicts. We lie to them and with pain contracts they don't trust us. We make them go to the streets. And this may seem paradoxal but is it possible that we can end addiction by prescribing More not Less opiates?" He was forced out by not only treating patients with care and higher than normal doses, but he CURED folks of things like multiple-personality, narcolepsy, and other conditions. I just missed him. I got his name from my school's administrator one month after he was forced to resign. He trusted and honored patients wishes and surprise surprise, not one death or overdose!
Robert R., you really have no way of knowing what has been said to her, if anything. She may or may not have had something said to her. Drs frequently blame the DEA, state or federal laws, etc for things that they choose to do. It could also be a situation of her learning from the mistakes that another dr has made. Drs have a professional responsibility to put accurate info in the medical records about patient history. If you haven't had marijuana since the 70's and you didn't want anyone to know, you shouldn't have told her. Combining marijuana with opiates can be dangerous.
Many years ago, there was something that I wasn't going to share with our family dr. It was personal and had nothing to do with my health, his treatment or any future treatment. I told him this and I asked him how could we do it. He told me to come in and talk to him in his office after the office had closed. I did this and we talked for a while. What I said to him never appeared in my medical records.
Robert Raper, sorry I forgot to add this. If you had done without the pain meds for three months, it was obvious that you didn't need them. Drs don't want patients stocking up on meds.
