2016 Cdc Guidelines For Prescribing Opioids For Chronic Pain (Page 3)
(Newest replies first)
Updated
Hey all fellow patients out there, did you know the CDC has published a list of their proposed 2016 guidelines for doctors who prescribe opioids for chronic pain? That includes oxycodone, lortab, percocet, hydrocodone, opana, suboxone, morphine, and any other drug that has an opiate ingredient in it that so many of us count on to lead normal lives!
This affects all of us and the comment period ends on January 13 2016! That's about a week from now! You know the doctors are going to have to follow whatever federal rules pass so if you are worried that you might not get the care you need please go to the gov web site for the office of the Federal Register and submit your comments to them before it's too late!
"The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announces the opening of a docket to obtain public comment on the draft CDC Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain (Guideline). The Guideline provides recommendations regarding initiation or continuation of opioids for chronic pain; opioid selection, dosage, duration, follow-up, and discontinuation; and assessment of risk and addressing harms of opioid use. The Guideline is intended to be used by primary care providers (e.g., family physicians or internists) who are treating patients with chronic pain (i.e., pain lasting longer than 3 months or past the time of normal tissue healing) in outpatient settings."

Editor's note: Please note that the above statement "You know the doctors are going to have to follow whatever federal rules pass" is technically correct but may be misleading in this case because the CDC draft says that it is "not a federal regulation" and that "adherence to the Guideline will be voluntary."
Editor's note # 2: The title for this discussion thread has been updated to reflect the topic most effectively.
Robert R., it is a drs responsibility to write things in your medical records that can affect your treatment. There is no way that a dr remembers things about patients because they have too many. If she hadn't written in your medical records that you told her you used Marijuana, it could hurt her in some situtions. If a dr makes a mistake and writes the wrong info in yoru medical records, you can ask them to change it. If they don't, you can submit a letter that is to be put in your medical records.
You said that the prescription was three month old, what did you do for pain meds for those three months ? It is always best to check prescriptions before leaving the drs office in case mistakes have been made. Most, if not all states have laws on how long Schedule II prescriptions are valid, as well as other prescriptions. Insurance companies also have rules on how long prescriptions are valid.
I am so sorry this happened to you! It's like Dr Robert Cochran ( a former pain doc and author of The Opiate Cure) said. "Us doctors are the ones causing patients to behave like addicts. We lie to them and with pain contracts they don't trust us. We make them go to the streets. And this may seem paradoxal but is it possible that we can end addiction by prescribing More not Less opiates?" He was forced out by not only treating patients with care and higher than normal doses, but he CURED folks of things like multiple-personality, narcolepsy, and other conditions. I just missed him. I got his name from my school's administrator one month after he was forced to resign. He trusted and honored patients wishes and surprise surprise, not one death or overdose!
When you call to make appointment for new doctor make sure you can talk to them they are able to use personal judgment and do not have to only go off what is written in records the good ones know there are some rotten ones out there and will be able to help you. If you can talk to them before seeing records and explain so when they get them they can see honestly helps keep the prejudging at bay in most circumstances.
My Dr told me on 9-8-15 that she would Not Prescribe Any Opioids at All For Any Chronic Pain patient. she messed up my medical Records so No Dr will Ever Help me again. Thanks Dr Shahady. I really appreciate that I went to the same Practice since 1985. She was a replacement for my Dr Stephen Thompson who passed away from Throat Cancer. I tell you He was a Great Dr and Friend. I'll never have that again after what Dr Shahady Did in Written Records. I'll never TRUST a Dr again. I was asked about things. I answered Honestly about Marijuana use and asked her Not to Put this in my Records. she said she would Honor my request and then Stabbed me in the Back by doing what I Asked Her Not To Do. Had I Known Dr Shady Had A lieing Honor is have Said NO. I would tell everyone Do Not Tell A Dr The Truth. It Will Bite You. Dr Thompson Knew me Very Well and never put the Marijuana in my Records, he Kept His Word. She Did NOT and on my last visit one of the Prescriptions that She Had Written Many Many Times she wrote Wrong. When I left that Day I Felt like I'd been hit in my Head. I Was in A Daze. I could not believe this Was going on. I got home and sent the Prescriptions off to my Mail order Pharmacy. when I ordered my fill in pain medication I was told the way it was written They Would Not Cover it. I called The Drs office to ask for this to be fixed to be told my prescription was over 6 months old and Actually It was 3 months old. she Would Not by a office Manager A Woman named Don. I just do not understand how you can have a Relationship you can Trust. it's A Must For A Dr or Lawyer you Must Be Able To Trust These Two Groups Of People, Who When You Need Either There Must Be That Relationship. Without it There is No TRUST, therefore You Can't Be Honest And Totally Candid. I Realize Some May think Me A POT Head that's on you But Sooner or Later it's Going To Be Something You Do And I Was Talking About Past Times, NOT NOW. I WAS NEVER ASKED TO TAKE A DRUG PANEL. I would have had I been asked But This Is the Situation I Find Myself in. I wrote to Dr Truedy Shady To Ask Her To Take any Reference To Marijuana use In My Past Out of my Records so my Records Are Useless. Isn't the Oath FIRST DO NO HARM? WELL IM HARMED. DO NOT TRUST YOUR DR.
They have not learned the mistakes of the past look up the laws from the late 1800'S until 1980's it is repeating I wish I had link on me but can easily be found looking up through google history of... thank you all very much on personal experience of the laser surgery I take it all in sadly the nerve that is damaged is hurting him in the area no man can bare and has turned him into a bear.. I think he could handle it better anywhere else. That along with the whole process we all know the routine of finding an honest knowledgeable doctor. He had one but retired. Since he had one tell him phantom pain!?!? The next we rushed in and his jeans were still in dryer.. my fault so he had to wear ones a little tight.. sadly that was the doctors excuse his pain was from wearing tight jeans! They don't realize how ridiculous that sounded and how far from normal truth that was. And sorry men but it's hard enough to get most of you to doctors as it is especially going through that humiliation.
Thanks Robert. I know how sucky chronic pain can be. I wouldn't wish it on anyone. Other than the physical pain is the emotional pain of dealing with docs. Addicts and pill mill operators have made it rough for legit patients. Dr treats there lifelong patients like addicts now and pharmacists give you the old stink eye. There's a difference between addiction and dependence but it seems they have forgotten there hypocratic oath; to first do no harm.
Okcgrl I have 3 disk in my neck from old fusion and it still hurts but I don't hurt as bad and the bone where my nerves came out at the bottom were to tight I wish you well.

Less Pain Peace
Robert I was just speaking from my experience. Not trying to be mean nor offend anyone. I too went to LSI and I was disappointed. They reviewed my MRI said they can help. I left in the same as I came. Still had to have a surgery and iI can say spinal fusion is awful and recovery was extremely painful for 3 straight months after. I cried forever and pain meds didn't help at all
Oklgirl I'm Robert R I went in dec bad 4 th lower Back and 2 bs Neck I had very serious problems I lived in a 8-9 pain level I have a 2 at best if I don't do much that invokes lifting or any bending it's been a GOD SEND TO ME they Cannot Fix Everyone's Injurys but belive me they look at your MRI and Can Tell You That They Can Help Or No They Can't. That last one is a Rough thing to hear I heard that at UVA in Virginia where I lived at the time 9 yrs ago a lot has Changed I Tell You It Has Helped Me Anyone In Pain Should At Least Check it Out My Spine Was In Bad Shape Where the Nerves come Out of Spine At Lower Back To the point I could Hardly walk Sooo that being said this Is Not A Paid Endorsment I So Not Have Any Thing Finacaly To Gain THIS IS THE EXPERIANCE I HAVE HAD ROBERT R LESS PAIN PEACE.
okcgirl , I haven't heard any good things about it either. That's why I suggested Jenny check the online reviews from patients.
I had to get an ALIF/PLIF fusion with instrumentation after spending $11000 at the the Laser Spine Institute
Laser Spine institute is a joke. It is such a fraud. Unlike the commercial you will get no relief. It only works for those with minor herniation.
Jenny, you need to check for online patient reviews of Laser Spine Institute at sites besides theirs. If your husband has Medicaid, they don't accept it.
Jenny the toll free no for Laser Spine center is1-866-DOCS -LSI all you do is find the nos from your phone I know you knew I'm just saying. I lived in a 8-9 -24/7 and now if I don't do much no lifting over 20 lbs of weight that's hard but I guess it is what it is and I Pray that Your Husband Can Find Relief They Are All Over The Country is see they can tell if they can help or they can't and that happens some Bur I Pray That Your Husband is told they can help him GOD BLESS. ROBERT R
Robert, now this question is not for myself. I only wish, however my husband back pain is severe and I myself have always been reluctant about back surgery. Having known so many throughout my life once done having to go back multiple times and did not hear anyone of them say it helped. However the laser spine is sparking my interest. I personally don't know anyone that used it as of yet. From what you posted it sounds promising. Would you recommend? Anyone else have opinions or know someone have feedback? Would be a life changer for him atleast if something is out there that does not put him in hospitals over and over again.
I Don't know of anyone wanting to Hurt anyone And I Pray it Is That way WE CAN DISAGREE BUT STILL RESPECT THE OTHER PERSONS VIEW BUT WHEN ANYONE CALLS ANOTHER A BAD NAME. IT ENVITES A ILL WILL IN ALL I HOPE FOLKS WILL THINK OF THE DAMAGE A UNKIND WORD OR TWO CAN DO AND WE DO NEED TO BACK THE THROTTLE BACK AND COOL OFF WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BE ADULTS WE ALL ARE IN PAIN AND WE ALL DESERVE MEDICAL MEDICANES FROM OUR DOCTORS AND BE KIND AND HAVE A TENDER HEART ILL NOT DO AS I DID I KNOW ANYONE WHO WANTS CAN TURN AROUND. EVEN ME I APPOLIGUSE IF I OFENDED ANYONE LETS ALL CARE MORE FOR OTHERS NOT JUST OUR SELF ATLEAST THATS WHAT I WANT JUST BE KIND. ITS EASIER THAN BEING MEAN. ROBERT R LESS PAIN PEACE
Everyone be nice. We are all in the same boat.. Let's not be mad at each other. Be mad at the system. No need to physically hurt anyone
I should have not Said anything about the MC each person does there own Thing It's Not Orginized Crime it's a motorcycle Club. That's what it really is and I don't like insurance cos either I have been Out a Long time I Don't know what anyone is up to So Please Leave them Out. Please it's not fair.
BL you have misunderstood, my wife has a good job we have the crummy insurance that her job gives. I had 2 procedures at Laser Spine in Tampa Fla in Dec. This was my 4th back 2nd neck procedure. I was in pain 24/7. I now have a level of 2 as long as I don't lift anything over 25 lbs that's hard to me. Yesterday and so far today I have took no opiates just ibuprofen for the first time in 20 yrs. I kept working in a machine shop till 2000, that's when my neck gave out. I left the shop went to the hospital and they operated that night. I worked a shift from 3:30 to 8:00. I liked it that way, all I needed was the prints for my parts. I do miss that it's a big piece of this man. I wish I could work but I'm no count for that anymore, if I get to ride one of my motorcycles, I have 4. I can't go far but I can ride a couple miles. That is what I like to do. I've been told I shouldn't but I am as long as the GOOD LORD GOD lets me breathe. The insurance that my wife gives me paid 100,000.00 for the back. They tried to say the neck was not a medical necessity but they have relented as Laser Spine made them aware it was who would have any surgery for fun? The insurance co and I have had some nice talks but the credit for anything good comes from the young Lady who does the benefits. She tried to get my last prescription but the Dr wrote it wrong for the first time ever and yes I get my disability. I worked all my life even when I rode with my Friends. I worked If a mandatory run came up if the place I worked would not give me time off I went anyway. I could always find a job. I was a Good Machinist. I learned young. I needed parts for a Motorcycle I was bringing back to life.
