2012 Oxycodone 30mg Shortage In Florida (Page 52)
(Newest replies first)

My spouse, who is in severe, chronic pain, has been a customer of Walgreens for many years. We live in Pinellas County, Florida. Everyday this week we have driven from Walgreen's to Walgreen's trying to fill his prescription for Roxicodone 30mg, to no avail. I cannot get any help from his regular pharmacy. I know that it's dangerous for them to tell a total stranger which store has them in stock, but I don't understand since they know him, why they can't call around or give us any assistance. I am at a total loss as to what to do & would appreciate any information that you could provide. It is so hard to see him in so much pain. Thank you.

Thanks Zira for the info. I had heard from my regular pharmacist this morning that someone else had lost their license. And Telecaster yes you are right!! I went to my regular Walgreens this morning to find my head pharmacist who had been on vacation ( he's is one of the very few here in Jax that does not lie) and discussed this situation with him. Well long story short one of his associates has been lying to people and I reported her today. I am sick of being treated like some crack head when all I am doing is trying to get my prescriptions filled. Also my whole family deals with this pharmacy, we shop in the store all the time and have probably between all of us 10 different meds that we get filled here THAT ARE NOT NARCOTIC!! Again as I told him this morning, we as a customer should be able to come in and get our prescriptions filled, no matter what they are

To verify some of the posts I read last night, let me add this. I saw my Dr. at 9:00 am yesterday morning. I went to the CVS in Sarasota that I've always done business with and presented my Rx. There was a substitute Pharmacist and sub tech, too.
The tech took the Rx over to the Pharmacist. They whispered a few words, then informed me that they had no oxycodone and had no idea when there would be any in stock.
I am not a conspiracy freak, but I felt that something was not "right".
Early this morning, before any delivery could be made, I went back to the same pharmacy and the regular Pharmacist was there and she knows me very well. She said, "Good mornin'," then took my 'script and simply told me I could pick it up in 30 mins.
Thirty mins. Later I returned and picked up my Rx of 30 mg. oxycodones.
I have no idea why the pharmacists are lying to people. But they do and it's disgusting.
She took the script

Cardinal Health, The distributor to 2500 pharmacies in FL and beyond has been shut down for two years as of May 15, 2012. That is the reason for the shortage. Call around and look for pharmacies that use McKesson as a distributor instead. Check out this link for more info:

Well I hope none of you live in Jacksonville Fl cause except for the Mom and Pop's it is virtually empty. I have had my brother's script for 3 weeks, have driven to every possible pharmacy in town : CVS,Walgreens,WinnDixie,Publix,Target,Walmart. Noone has any. And the sad thing is that he, like alot of the rest of you, need this just to function. He was in a terrible auto accident a few years back and when they came out with this medication, it was like a miracle to him. I just think it is very sad when you have been with a pharmacy for years and cannot get your medication

Let me start by stating that I'm a retired US Marine that because of my service, I do have legitmate injuries to my upper back and legs from humpiing and grumping an 80# pack, produce delivery driver for 15 years handleing a hand truck with up to 350# pounds on it, jumping in and out of truck daily, plus, had a rear end car collsion. Our everfaithful VA won't touch me so I go to a liceinsed pain management office for years, and don't dr.shop.Yeah same story in SW Florida, Been from Port Charlotte, North Port, Englewod, Punta Gorda with same script in wallet for 2 weeks now. No one has any and when they do get them, it's first come first serve if your lucky. This the work of the DEA and I don't know why?. The scripts are barcoded, the dr. is registered with a DEA number. A copy of the script is automatically transmitted to the DEA as soon as they are printed (now from laptops, in case no one noticed). It is up now to the pharmacist! They ARE GOD when it comes to saying yes or no. I'll sometimes agree that they when they say they don't them, but when they tell you "I don't feel comfortable filling it" That is plain bulls***!. They have then but don't fell comfortable? Come on, I' not stupid, they have them they like the POWER OF BEING ABLE TO SAY NO!. But what can you do? Can't argue or DEMAND them that would be stupid person who does and I've seen it done. Now I'm not stupid and it is the idiots that abuse and or sell them (which is means us). Have heard dumbass people IN office setting up deals over phone, really! So the legit people are turning illegal to get their meds. Why can't they leave us alone? Seriously, with the new laws, some stated here- you can no longer be an out of state resident to be seen, nor under the age of 25, Need to have it filled within a 50 mile radius of the issueing dr. Only 2 pain meds now- one is a quick release and the other must be a timed released. No more Xanax unless from a Psyciatrist, only Valium. The Florida Drug Discount Card is life saver at Walgreens/CVS ($100-150) but they say that they no longer have them. Checked thier wbsite for places that take the card- even though they list them, it's mostly for everything OTHER than the pain meds. If a mom&pop shop have them, prepare to pay an arm&leg for them and then guess what, you'll probably HAVE TO SELL some to get the price down, so NOW we are guilty and have had to short ourselves to offset the cost. One mom&pop shop in North Port had them and the person actually paid $1,080.00 for 240 of them! Why? Because of the DEA, also Gov. Rick Scott is the driving force behind this senario becuase HIS BROTHER is a PILL HEAD!! And he is taking it out on his own people. So be smart in the next vote and get him the HELL OUT OF OFFICE. Enough is enough. Keep checking this site as I'm going to figure out how to start a petition against this. WE NEED TO STAND TOGETHER AGAINST BIG BOTHER.

@UFC - thanks for the post. Next month has rolled around and I'm still having the same problem. Appt. was MONDAY and it is now WEDNESDAY. Last month when I posted, I had went to my main Walgreens during lunch and was able to finally fill them. Was hoping I would have some of the same luck as last time - however, now I am being told (by my main Walgreens pharmacy) that their location will no longer be receiving in shipments or filling prescriptions for the oxycodone 30mg. Pretty sad. I received a law suit settlement recently and I lost my job. SO for right now, I am un-insured and will be forced to pay cash. Walgreens (of course) is the cheapest place to fill - but I'm getting pretty desprate enough to try a mom & pop place and pay out the ass just so I can feel NORMAL again. I think I will try Kay's today - heard of them from a friend and think he had been successful filling is medication also. I really appreciate the tip. :) wish me luck!

My advice would be to just be persistent, don't shop.around all day looking this just is a waste of time.if you have been goin to a pharmacy for a long time they will take care of you once they have them. I've been going to.cvs for two years and sometime they are not in stock but I go back everyday no matter what they tell me.I never wait more than a few days......good luck

Yep Steve, that's what we are getting here in Jax as well. Of course if you read the article I can see why. That was the reason we only had a few pharms that where able to get the meds due to the fact that the 6 Walgreens that are under investigation down state were getting them all. As I've said before the stuff is going to start getting real ugly. It's a shame that it has come to this. And what's really sad is that in 6 months, it will be something new that the DEA and pharms have a problem with.

Hi Kat,Read your post and this is an ongoing problem. From what I know all pharmacies are limited by the DEA rules on how much of oxycodone they can order and have on hand at one time.I too live in Tampa and my doctor was in Orlando for the fact I have been seeing him for almost 12 years,I moved to tampa but still commuted to orland every day for work and it was best for me to still see him since everyday I was in orlando working and did not have to take a day off to see a doctor in tampa even though now I live here for almost six years.I dont know what doctor you use,but after I retired and was not working in orlando, was commuting once a month to keep my same doc. After a while with gas so high I finally got a mdoc in tampa and int the same building was a pharmacy on first floor called Kays and I never had a problem getting the oxycodone. They almost always had it,and the few times they didnt they ordered it and had it the next day and if you wanted they would even mail it too you. There are 3 Kays pharmacies that I know of,one on fletcher that is the one I was going to,the other two you would have to look up.Also my local sweetbay was great about having what I needed and if they happened to be out they would have it the next day.I hope this helps you and if you dont have insurance Kays prices were half of any other pharmacy that I had priced.Good luck.

Avoid Walgreens, they are faxing your prescriptions to the DEA. They are not out of the medication. They just don't want to fill your prescription. DEA and Florida board of pharmacy is on board, STAY AWAY. They just took my script, scanned it and said "they don't feel comfortable filling my prescription" with a smirk.

Our constitutional rights are being violated and we need to start a class action suit against the state of Florida and the FDLE for preventing us the persuit of happyness. I am going to now file for disability and get a lawyer because I can not work with out this medication and now can not provide for my family the government is preventing me from obtaining the legal medication I need to be a productive member of society so the can now support me my wife and my adopted son. Obama wants every one on the dole anyway ....

The situation now is depriving people with legitimate needs. The abusers are most likely still finding a way to obtain their drugs to get their high, while true chronic pain patients are forced to go without or being delayed relief as a result of poor planning by the state and federal government. This needs to be addressed and resolved YESTERDAY.
There's no doubt that it will force some to obtain their meds via alternate sources (illegally). How f'ing ironic is that..

You guys are certainly not alone. I live in Tampa - the "pill mill" capital of the world and never ONCE had to wait longer than one day after my appointment to fill my 135 oxy 30mg. I only fill at Walgreens - I have a main store I fill at but when they are out, I have several back ups that usually will have it the same day - but if not, the following morning...always. WELL, It's Wednesday and my appointment was Monday. I took Monday off as usual for my appointment and what not - however, I had to call off Tuesday b/c I couldn't find a Walgreens that had stock ... and we all know the best chance you have of finding something during these times is very early in the morning. Couldn't call off today so now I'm sitting at work, sick and in pain....WAITING to take my lunch break...WAITING to get off work... just to keep searching and driving all over Tampa. It's disgusting. We supposedly have SUCH a problem w/ the amount of pills being in the city - yet I'm doing it the LEGAL and LEGIT way and cannot find anything unless I want to break the law and buy off the streets for 20+ a pc. I just don't understand, Florida has passed all these laws and set up these programs to eliminate doctor shoppers, out of staters, drug users, etc. etc. yet we STILL have a shortage? Prior to this, we had EVERYONE going to the doctor and filling their scripts no problem - the problem USED to be the visit to the doctor...having to wait for a long time, paying the visit, etc. but you'd fill your scripts w/ ease....so to me, it doesn't make sense why we have such a shortage to where not ONE Walgreens in the Tampa area has ANY oxycodone AT ALL. I searched Monday from 1pm to 10pm...I did a search in the morning and then later that night I went to all of the same places again to see if they got anything in... so many people going in and out doing the same thing I am. It's sad. No one should have to be doing this. TIP: Instead of asking your pharmacist "when will you get more in" - ask them "when was your LAST shipment and how often to receive your shipments" ... it will eliminate the problem of them acting like they have no clue. Chances are you will receive more helpful information asking the right questions.

I've have asked this question to several people and rx's but I cant really get a straight answer. When a rx says that their out or its first come first serve are they being truthful? What I mean is if they say their out does that mean that if I check back every day I may actually get them or should I not even bother. I was going th the same rx for over 3 years but the last 3 months I wasnt able to get from them and they say were out check back. are they being truthful and should I keep trying with them or did they just decide not to get them anymore and arent telling me. Because that would be very cruel to make me keep comming back.

Just getting in and out of the car takes me about 5 minutes just to get in the car and 10min to get out with the wheel chair. If someone knows for sure please assist with a responce. or if you know where I can fill my script in naples to north port
