2012 Oxycodone 30mg Shortage In Florida (Page 4)
(Newest replies first)

Updated

My spouse, who is in severe, chronic pain, has been a customer of Walgreens for many years. We live in Pinellas County, Florida. Everyday this week we have driven from Walgreen's to Walgreen's trying to fill his prescription for Roxicodone 30mg, to no avail. I cannot get any help from his regular pharmacy. I know that it's dangerous for them to tell a total stranger which store has them in stock, but I don't understand since they know him, why they can't call around or give us any assistance. I am at a total loss as to what to do & would appreciate any information that you could provide. It is so hard to see him in so much pain. Thank you.

I was going to small pharmacy for a yr now. The 1 pharmacist was filling my 1 RX for opana. I go last WK, pharmacist no longer there. I hand my RX to another 1, hands KT right back, we don't have it, don't know if or when either. Went without for 10 days. Turned away like an animal. I felt so horrible, I'm not a young spring chicken anymore. The same thing happened a yr ago. I stopped at another small pharmacy that day. This pos pharmacist took RX, I sat there for almost an hr. Tells me " I need mri or letter from Dr about your pain". I said fine. I was burning inside. He then tells me " your I insurance is garbage, & it will COST me $50-100 to fill this RX, I can't help you BC it doesn't pay for me to help you"! I wanted to spat in his face. My insurance pays over $500 for med in addition to the $150 copay it costs every month. It makes me sick, that my life is played with time & time again. He tells me go to a "chain" BC they don't care about the fact that you're a losing proposition. Really??? I found them 10 days later somewhere else. I was told they'll try to stock for me. It's bad enough I can't access the Roxycodone anymore. I vomited everyday for first 5 days back on opana. They make me severely nauseated. I have go to thru hell to get the RX filled, pay thru the nose, get sick as a dog from the med. I'm so tired of the sick game, the suffering. I'm seriously considering weaning off med BC I'd rather suffer than live life like this. It's so wrong. I'm put thru hell to get some pain relief. I'm still adjusting & haven't been right in weeks now. All while I know other's are doing terrible things with their medications. They have no problems filling them thru mail order, living off the system & getting them for free. Other's go far away from where they live, see a quack & fill their meds with no problems. Where's the fairness & justice for us? Where's the d e a for these horrible people? I'm tired of it. I'm tired of playing by the rules & getting screwed. It's a disgrace. it makes me crazy mad some think this is a game. This is a last resort, not to be taken lightly or to ever think of doing things with these strong meds that people should be put in jail for the rest of their lives for not doing the right thing. If I ever knew anyone was taking or anything other than what's prescribed to that person, they deserve to rot in jail forever. Thanks to this state, the pill mills & the junkies, the real CPP will continue to suffer BC of them all. I'm close to living in agony. I think it would be more humane than living like a puppet. Living in constant fear everyday that sooner or later, the rug will be pulled out once again. I'm tired of living on the edge. I'm tired of fighting for a right I'm denied. I feel like I aged 10 yrs with this last round of no one can help. When you live in constant pain, & then add the mental anguish on top of that, only those who live in severe pain can understand how I feel mentally, physically, emotionally & spiritually. God bless those who understand me. To the abusers & junkies, I hope they're dealt with as they should be, in jail or rehab.

who do you think is controlling the pharmacies from filling alot of scripts-the DEA-they Had Walgrens licenses taken for handing out so many an even took them to court-they cannot fill no pain meds now-thanks to pill mills writting 240 oxycodonesto a 18 yr old an up,they dont care who they write them for as long as you pay them 125.00 to 250.00 each month an make them rich they could care less rather you need them or not,the main thing is your making them rich for giving you 4 scripts -as I said if you dont have Cancer-or anything else wrong with you at all you shouldn't be allowed to get these pain meds, but no one sees my point an what its cost everyone who takes them because of chronic pain each day, there are hundreds of people who there is nothing wrong with at all who are getting these pills just to sale on the street-just like a sheriff buddy of mine told me he went on a call an a 2yr old had oxycodone powder all over his lips, his 21yr old mother an 22yr old father both had 240 oxys in a bottle an they tested both of them an neither had pills in there system cause they get them to sale, why work when you can go to a pill mill pay them to write you scripts an you take them an sale them on the street an make more then 4 people do working from them an causing the people who really need them to suffer an it is all the DEA fought for allowing them to remain open an then turn around an check pharmacies to see how many there giving out an closing them down for giving out what a doctor wrote to you,so they will close a pharmacy an leave the pill mills open, only reason that can be is because there being Paid off

I am really surprized he is still getting oxys -but walgrens is thew worse to go to now days, they had the one in pasco shut down from handing out any pain meds now-I dont understand the DEA will allow pill mills to stay open an write scripts for 240pills of one type an 60 of 3 others an thats what pharmacies are in Business for I thought was to fill your scripts,But the State of florida is the only State that allows pill Mills an you Don't have to be referred by no primary Doctor which should also be a Direct single for someone walking in an paying 350 to 500 to get alot of scripts,I feel your Husbands pain believe me,I know what real pain is 24/7 all week long,an they would still be filling everyones pain meds if it wasn't for people who have no pain an not a thing wrong with them going to a pill mill an making them Rich to get Drugs to get High with oe Sale so there lazy ass Dont have to work for a living, they make more then a couple who works all month in one week from selling them,it would be good if the DEA wasn't taking a pay off to let them stay open an making 40 to 70.000 a month just to hand anyone who comes into there office scripts to sale or Take it Don't matter to them either way what you do with them as long as you pay there fee each month, people come from every State to florida to get scripts from the pill mills an then people in severe chronic pain have to suffer cause of all the junkies the pill mills got started on Heavy duty Pills that they give Cancer People an not even a cancer person gets as many pills as the pill mills give to you.until the DEA stops taking the payoffs from them an they close them Down then its going to get rougher an rougher an soon the only people that will be getting pain meds is the ones in the hospital because the So called Sunshine State allowed the RifT RAFT to come in an Destroy the entire state, there is alot of us who has real pain while others just do it to get high an sale an soon it will make everyone have to leave this state to get rid of pain because of pill mills ruining it for all of the chronic people

No pharmacy will dispense 30 mg roxycodone anymore. A family member w/ stage 4 cancer is dispensed 2-15mg every 4-6hrs & not in this state. That's reality. We can thank certain agencies, & loose pain mgt drs for true CPP not able to seek this medication in this strength. It sickens me someone is able to get them thru mail order, along with a long acting med. They also do bad stuff to boot. Then we wonder why legit people can't access med. It's over, too many kids addicted & dying BC of it.

Where was this pharmacy? Perhaps I can get them? But this was posted last year and 2013 It seems impossible to get the 30's now. The DEA shut down Walgreens from selling them for 2 years. And the 80 million fine. Now no other pharmacy want's to deal with them anymore, for fear they will be attacked by the DEA.

Amen Iblixa, most of the time, morons that know the least, speak their stupidity the most. I'm positive all pain mgt drs are anesthesiologists. They have much more education. I know that's why my family member w/ stage 4 cancer was sent to pain mgt by the oncologist. You're right, the oncologist is focused on the treatment, & PM Dr is focused on controlling pain in patients. This is the course of how system operates. regular MD's don't want to prescribe narcotics on a regular basis. I know pain mgt requires an MRI before they will prescribe any pain med. All this BS this moron speaks of, shows he knows nothing. I'm trying not to let people like that get under my skin. I'm sick of not only living on chronic pain, but also having to defend myself. MRI's don't lie, they show everything. So go harass another group and stop posting your negative BS.

Brim- well said...a dude knows less than my dog about chronic pain, who should write the meds, etc. Hey moron(dude) in case you didn't know, a pain clinic/dr looks over mri's and has to be qualified to treat pain by taking several courses beyond a regular md doctor for pain management. Oncologist are strictly cancer doctors and there not going to see different people as they are busy enough dealing within their "scope" of care...just as pain doctors seek to help on individual basis for different conditions that apply for that patient. MORON

Wow, Read all this for four hours. I have been getting sick and stressed out so much over this issue for a year. Nobody was talking about it though (not in "real" circles), only on these blogs I guess. I hope to post more soon, but just to let you know, I am a pharmacist, I work at a chain that is mentioned here over and over again. I have been as honest as I could to my patients I have relationships with them. I have seen seem leave crying when I was unable to fill for them (for many reasons I will divulge later). I hate it. I really do. Believe me, I loved throwing junkies out, and I thought this was all going to get better, where I, as a pharmacist, was finally allowed to use my profession judgment, and judgment is what it is, to fill or not to fill without worrying about an addict complaining to a pencil necked manager that I was rude, and have to just doll the crap out to all the junkies. But that is what corporate wanted, and the DEA hammered them, then us. Now, I can no longer fill for those of you on this blog, "because I am filling to many". If they had always let Pharmacists do what we were trained to do (and no, we are not God, we do not diagnose, but with a given diagnosis, we are trained to know the best medication for that condition and all aspects of how that drug works, that part the doctors do not know, they learn how to find the problem, then they prescribe recommended treatments for that problem, pharmacists learn all about that "treatment"). Many years ago before the oxy epidemic in Florida, I had more autonomy. I didn't fill for obvious addicts and pill mill doctors. But I did for real chronic pain patients and board certified physicians. And sure, many fooled me over the years, and yes, I probably judge some wrong....that's how medicine (and humans) are. But now, I can't fill anything for anybody because we can't get it, and when we do, its not enough for all the patients that need it. And I hate deciding who needs it more than the other. I have no idea how many weeks I have left as a retail pharmacist. I try not to take my emotions to work, but I do feel for many of you, and I do know many of you will be better off the meds (after many months of feeling like crap, because it will take your body a long time change after having that medication in you for so long)...but for some of you, I know how good it makes you feel. How productive you are, how much energy and life you feel. But the Government does not think you have this chemically induced happiness, because you don't show up in the headlines, only the dead youths, addicted babies, and well-fare recipient drug dealers do.

Dude knows nothing. The relative I spoke of has stage 4 CA, & is going to a PM Dr to recieve his pain meds. The amt he's prescribed is a very high dosage. 12- 30mg roxycodone daily + 100mg fentenyl patch x every 3 days. The person is also receiving tx from an oncologist too. Before you post, educate yourself. Like many have posted, each person is different, whether if its an illness, accident etc. You only prove you're a judgemental jerk. Why people are posting here that aren't in need of pain meds is ignorant.

By the way "a dude", what medical training do you have? Right. None. Thought so. Therefore your post is meaningless and based on nothing but the opinion of a random person with no education on the subject. Your uncle was ONE person. Each patient has different needs, different pain levels and different pain tolerance. To say only oncologists should be writing that dosage just sounds like an uneducated response from an uneducated kid.

Ignorant people need to realize that these drugs were created FOR pain patients, to limit their pain! Morons like dude seem to think junkies make these meds in their basement to sell on the street. Nope, just prescribed by doctors (you know, the only people qualified to say whether or not it's needed?!) for legitimate conditions for the most part. The junkies abusing it for fun came after. The pain patients suffering here would certainly rather trade all the pain meds in the world to get their lives back and not have to suffer daily. Think about that. And I agree- if your family member (or you, seeing as you sound shallow and selfish) was suffering from global arthritis would you be whining about them taking medication Southey can get out of bed every morning? I think not. Use your brain.

Well said Karin. I'm so sick of being judged, & looked upon like a piece of trash by some. I never thought I would need pain medication to live a quality of life. I hate it, I beat myself up everyday BC I'm ashamed I'm not stronger. This is not how I thought I would spend my older yrs. I raised kids, worked hard all my life & am a good person. I've tried many other options, & got little relief. I take med as needed, & use hot/ cold therapy & lidoderm patches also. Most of us didn't choose this path, so before some are quick to judge us, refer to Karin's post on if it ead 2 of your loved ones suffering day after day, for yrs. It's a basic human right to get some sort of pain control. BC of the severe abuse, CPP's are being made to suffer needlessly. I've had to switch to another med,& now deal with chronic nausea & vomiting. I get some pain relief, but being constantly nauseated & the cost of the med, makes me wonder if I'm better off w/o med or not living at all. I would never choose the latter, BC I love my family. But the last yr has been almost intolerable. God Bless those that are living this life of chronic pain. For those who are quick to pass judgment, I wish you could feel how we feel, just for a short time, then you'd possibly understand a day in the life of a CP sufferer.

Chronic pain is a debilitating condition, no matter what the cause. The vast majority of patients go thru months and even years of treatments that simply do not work. We all have tried so many different medications, OTHER than opoiods to relieve the pain we are in every day. We do NOT want to have to take these powerful narcotics, but alas, the medical research has not kept up with what we are going thru. Personally, i have tried over 8 different medications over the course of 15 months in an attempt to find ANYTHING that might ease my pain and allow me to function on some level of normalcy. For me, they simply do not work. I have also tried a "synthetic" narcotic pain medicine and i may as well have been taking a baby aspirin for all the relief it brought, which was NONE.

Law makers are so focused on the "abusers" of these medicines and what they need to do to stop them, that they have totally lost sight of who these drugs were designed to help. We are NOT looking for the next high. We do NOT get a buzz from taking these meds. We do NOT even get adequate relief in many cases from taking these drugs. Too many of us suffer every day because of the laws that have been passed in the last few years. Our doctors and pharmacists are afraid to prescribe and fill our medicines and we are the ones that suffer. Yes, accidents happen, but that is not confined to this particular class of drugs. You can OD on just about anything, even OTC medicines.

Before you can pass judgement on anyone surrounding this issue, ask yourself this.... if your mother, father, sister, child were in extreme pain every day but they are not "allowed" to obtain a medication that would allow them to function outside of the bed they are lying in, wouldn't you insist that this medication be made available to them? That's what it's like...every day. Without these meds, patients become bound to bed rest and are suffering horrendously every day. I feel that there are more suicides from being unable to endure the pain any longer than there are lives saved by restricting addicts from getting them!

Spell check nightmare! Family member can fill roxycodone with NO problem @ any of the pharmacy chains up there.

* I meant family member takes 30 mg roxycodone. For constipation, try the combo Brim spoke of, it's sennokot & stool softener combo.it comes in generic form to save $ as well as miralax too. Also miralax. Prune juice works well too. Rx for lactulose works well too.

Brim is correct. Most narcotics cause constipation. fentynal patches ( I know its misspelled) is 100 x's stronger than morphine. That is 1 drug that unless you're in very severe pain, is over the top. It's also very pricy as I have a family member w/ stage 4 cancer that is using them. Roxycodone is almost non existent here in FL. The family member I spoke of also takes 40 mg oxycodone, and can fill them more problem. It's up north though.I was also taking them for over 2 yrs, & haven't been able to fill them on over a yr. I don't understand, BC I know someone who goes to PM & gets theirs thru mail order pharmacy. I too gave up, it's over, and have switched to another very expensive drug. My next step is to either go cold turkey or get RX for suboxone. I believe now more than ever why they won't fill roxycodone. It's not only the terrible misuse & crime, it's all about the $$$. It's cheap, & there's no $ to be made. The risk of any pharmacy carrying them isn't worth it financially and legally. Take care, as you're not alone.
