19 Years Old Been On Oxycodone For Almost 4 Years

I have somewhat severe Crohn's disease and was diagnosed at 15 but had bad stomach issues long before that. I'm now 19 years old and I've been on just about every treatment for the disease and nothing has ever worked. A few years ago I had 1.5 feet of my colon removed since it had become so inflamed and ulcerated. I've tried everything but nothing helps it seems. I spend everyday in severe pain to the point where I can't work and I can't go to school. I'm watching my youth pass me by and being completely revolved around my disease. I often go to the bathroom 10-20 times a day and my stomach is constantly in severe pain with spasms and joint pains as well. I've been on Vicodin, Percocet, OxyContin, and now I'm just on 4 15 mg oxycodone hcl a day. I've been treated like an addict and degraded and mistreated by doctors so much because of my age (as if my disease is not degrading enough). I never even wanted to be on pain medicine to begin with but it was first given to me at 13 yo after an emergency appendectomy. At 16 I was upped from hydrocodone to oxycodone. I know it's not good for me and I have never abused my meds yet I still get treated like an addict. I try not taking them but it becomes physically impossible and I have to or I'm hardly able to move. I only weigh 110 pounds and I'm a male so I struggle to keep my weight up and without my pain meds my weight drops drastically. I just want to know is it bad that I have to have so many pain meds at such a young age? I've tried going without them but like I said they truly do give me back somewhat of the quality of my life. I'm just tired of being judged? Please share opinions.

No, it isn't bad, some people with chronic illnesses such as yours do need them, and for far longer periods of time. The main issue is that the DEA has issued directives calling some prescribing practices into serious question, so if a doctor isn't absolutely sure about someone's medical condition and why something is being prescribed, they risk losing their license to practice medicine, heavy fines and jail time.

The FDA warns that such medications carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation.

What types of doctors have you been consulting? Have you tried a pain management specialist?
