It depends why someone is having pain.
For instance, if someone is suffering chronic pain, they may be prescribed one dose of time released Oxycodone, as well as another of a regular release formulation to treat breakthrough pain.
However, in other cases, where someone is suffering intractable pain due to a possibly fatal condition, such as stage 4 cancer, then their doctor is free to prescribe as they see fit to help keep them comfortable.
The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.
