My eight year old son was on Adderal ER 15 mg for about 8 months and he really did well at school finally. Last week the Dr. noticed he has lost 8 lbs since we started it and now switched him to 15mg of Dexmethylph Er. He now weighs 45.2 lbs and is 47 in. tall. Is this going to make a difference? I know he won't gain weight by using this but how is it different than Adderal? - Filed in Dexmethylphenidate

Re: Alex (# 2)

Oh and yes it can cause weight loss and if you don't make your son eat, then you will eventually need to take to the emergency room. Also while on this pill don't be surprised if you son says he's not hungry the pill decreases your appetite and make you well not hungry. Trust me I would know I am stuck in between 95 - 100 pounds because being on this pill makes me loose weight.

I take the same medication and I would advise to have caution when having your son on this medication. It can also cause heartburn, acid reflex and sometimes stomach pains.

Hello, Linda! How are you?

Dexmethylphenidate is very similar, but not exactly the same, so there's a chance that it won't cause the same anorexic side effect for him that the Adderall did.

However, the most common side effects include nausea, dizziness, insomnia and irritability.

Are there any other questions or concerns?
